  • A Word from Sean Capkin '06

One of the most exciting times of the year here at SU is family weekend, when students’ parents and siblings can come up to campus and see what life is like here at SU. I always love when my parents and younger brothers come up to visit and see and share in what has become such a large part of my life. When thinking about it though, I realized there are a number of other titles that, as far as the student body goes, might fit the weekend just as well. Here are a few of my favorites:

Be a Tour Guide Weekend! – Ever wonder what it is like to be a tour guide? Here is your chance! Walk around continually naming buildings and fields, including any important personal and prevalent anecdotes. Remember to point out rest rooms wherever they are available, and try not to lose anyone.

Clean Up Your Room Weekend! – It is only half-way through the first semester, but believe me, when it comes to the accumulation of dirty clothes, trash, and other assorted floor-fillers, seven weeks is more than enough time to create hazardous-to-your-health living conditions. It will be the first time all semester that anyone has thought about touching a vacuum or properly using their wastebasket and drawers, and most will be lucky if they can find them.

Eat Anywhere but the Cafeteria Weekend! – While I do not want to be mean or criticize the cafeteria because the food there is very good, usually by the time the family is coming up, students will have, shall we say, grown ‘accustom’ to the choices that the cafeteria provides. When you eat three meals a day, seven days a week, in the same place with the same choices, you are ready for a change of pace. Jump in the mini-van, and let mom and dad take you out on the town.

Early to Bed Weekend! – As if it is not enough that it is the end of Daylight Savings Time and you will be getting an extra hour of sleep anyway, knowing that you have to be up at nine to meet your parents to go out to breakfast, (to fulfill the Eat Anywhere but the Cafeteria criteria), you can go to bed three-to-six hours earlier than normal. Students will actually be able to function normally this weekend and through the week, naps not necessary!

In all honesty though, family weekend truly is a wonderful time here on campus. It is neat to see everyone with their families perusing through the bookstore and taking in the football game. It is a time that all students, including myself, enjoy and appreciate. Even if it means that we have to clean our rooms.

APAN Member of the Month: Carole ('67) and Dick Pursell

The APAN Member of the Month section highlights individual APAN members who have contributed significantly to the expansion and success of APAN over the past year.

The APAN Members of the Month for October are Carole and Dick Pursell. As a high school senior Carole was attracted to the beauty of the campus and the friendliness of the faculty and staff. The fact that her parents were friends of Dr. Gustave Weber, SU President at the time, and that SU had a good football team, made it an easy decision for Carole to apply. She originally wanted to be a business major, but her parents insisted a liberal arts education would be better, leading her to major in psychology and minor in math. She played field hockey and was a member of PSI, the psychology honor fraternity, but also helped with projects at the TKE house, where her fiancé, the late John Grebe '65, lived. Of the times Carole relates, "I have vivid memories of the GA fire (when the girls were straining at the window to see it because it was after hours and we were not allowed to leave the dorms!), President Kennedy's assassination during French class, the hard work on all the Homecoming floats, Dr. Weber leading the football team for several games, and Dr. Steltz's discussions with us on proper dinner attire (pearls, skirts, and nylons)."

After graduation she found a job using her math background at the Federal Reserve in Philadelphia as an auditor, and, after a 14 year hiatus from the business world, went back to work for the Montgomery County Court House as an Indirect Cost Accountant, where she has been for the last 17 years. Carole frankly states that, "I really didn't give SU much thought after graduation until my husband, John Grebe, passed away in 1986 and I decided to memorialize him with a scholarship, and honor our daughter, Allison Grebe '94, during her senior year. Being back on campus during her 4 years there, I realized just how much SU gave to me in my lifetime - the education to make a living on my own, many supportive college friends, a husband and 2 daughters, one of which carried on the tradition of attending SU, and many new acquaintances, with whom I could enjoy SU again."

Dick married into the SU family 14 years ago when, a week after his honeymoon with Carole, he drove Allison to SU for an interview. Since most of Carole's friends are SU grads and Allison attended SU, as Carole says, "he had no choice but to become an honorary member of the SU community!" Carole and Dick have attended almost every single football game, both home and away, since 1991!

Carole and Dick joined APAN because they love to tell inquiring students and parents how wonderful SU is, and college fairs give them the opportunity to do so. While Carole and Dick are active in every facet of APAN, Carole feels that hosting the freshmen summer send off’s each year is the most fun and rewarding activity. “We love meeting new SU students and parents and seeing them later in the football stands or walking on campus. Without a doubt, they all agree that the choice their child made was a good one.”

SU Outstanding Performer of the Month

This month’s SU Outstanding performer is senior Cari Chrisostomou, who had one of the several leading parts in the fall musical “On the Town,” performed October 24th -26th . Chrisostomou played the role of Hildy Esterhazy, a cabbie who, after continually falling asleep at the wheel, is fired, but takes her taxi out for one last night on the town. Chrisostomou gave one of many excellent individual performances, and she cites the closeness of the cast, with seven of its leads being seniors, as one of the reasons for the musicals success. Chrisostomou lives for the thrill of acting and being on stage, as she says, “it’s a natural high in your body, a special kind of rush that makes you feel alive.” Of the theater program in general she says, “SU’s theater productions can rival any other big time college. They keep getting so good and professional.” Cari will graduate in the spring semester majoring in, what else, but Musical Theatre.

Killer Crusader: Eshelman Named Division III National Player of the Week

Kerri Eshelman, a junior middle hitter for the woman’s volleyball team, was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week for the week ending October 18. After setting the career record for kills with 1,046, (she now currently has 1,131), on Thursday of that week, she dominated the Marymount Invitational of Saturday of that week, leading the team to wins over two regionally ranked teams while garnering MVP honors. Eshelman, a finance major with a minor in information systems, also excels in the classroom with a 3.02 GPA. She is the first player in program history to earn Player of the Week honors.

    Hot Off the Presses!

-Susquehanna University has been profiled as one of the 351 best colleges in the nation by The Princeton Review, which released the ratings in mid-August. The Princeton Review ranks Susquehanna as #10 in a top-20 list for the "Best Quality of Life," joining such other institutions as the University of Richmond, Dartmouth College, Williams College and Amherst College. In addition to the quality of life category, SU was ranked #8 for "Students Happy with their Financial Aid."

-Susquehanna University's School of Arts, Humanities and Communications has added graphic design to the list of majors available to students.

-The Arlin M. Adams Center for Law and Society is bringing National Public Radio's award-winning program, "Justice Talking" to campus later this month. The program will explore the issue of academic freedom during a fast-paced hour of debate, interspersed with questions from the live studio audience.

Crusader Campus Hot Spot: The Kind Cafe

It is a Wednesday night and you are done your homework. There is nothing good on television, you do not have a car on campus, and you don’t feel like sitting in your dorm. What can you do? What most SU students are doing these days is heading down to Market Street to hang out at this month’s Crusader Campus Hot Spot, The Kind Café. The café, which opened in January of this year, has quickly found its way into the hearts of many SU students with delicious coffee, espresso, smoothie drinks, and tasty pastries. Depending on when you go there are plenty of opportunities for entertainment. The Kind Café routinely offers poetry readings, acoustic- and small- band performances, and, if you write your own poetry, they even have open mic nights! If you are in town, stop on by!

    Celebrating Our Cultures Weekend

Celebrating Our Cultures Weekend will take place fron November 6-8. The weekend is a great opportunity for minority high school seniors to visit campus, spending two nights in the dorms with current students, and attending various classes, workshops, and activities. There will be a lot going on that weekend, including a Diversity Symposium, a number of SU instrumental and choral concerts, and a stand-up comedian. As you know, the Class of ’07 was our most diverse class ever, and we want to continue that trend. If there are any minority students that may be interested please inform of the dates and how to contact the Office of Admissions. It promises to be a great weekend!

However, if you are responding to us with an urgent or important request, please, CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE as per your request. E-mails with the changed Subject line will be read and replied to as soon as possible. If you need to reach us right away, please contact Pam at 1-800-326-9672. Thank you!

    TABLE BANNER UPDATE

After receiving many comments about the APAN College Fair display last fall, we purchased 50 table banners for the exclusive use of APAN members beginning with the spring 2003 fairs. Unfortunately, many of these table banners were never returned, and with the fall fair season upon us, we need these banners back!

Please check any APAN supplies you may have left over from last year, and if you still have a table banner, please return it to us ASAP! Additionally, after you have completed a fair, please return the table banners to us along with your inquiry cards within three business days unless you are covering another fair in the near future. It is important that we have enough banners available to cover all of the upcoming fairs. Thank you very much!

    MATERIALS FOR COLLEGE FAIRS

We have had a very successful fall college fair season thus far, and much of this success is attributed to you and all of your incredible efforts. When supplying you with materials for the fair, we do our best to provide you with everything that you will need and as many materials as possible. We have a motto here that, "If we offer it, the students will take it!" If you are working at a college fair and you run out of brochures, it is okay, we can only provide you with so many! If students are interested in a specific area of SU, have them fill out an inquiry card and please indicate that interest on the top of the card. We will be sure to have the appropriate materials sent their way.

APAN WEB SITE UPDATE - 2003-2004 APAN HANDBOOK

These referral forms will allow APAN members to refer prospective students as well as waive the application fee for any high school senior applying to SU. Be on the lookout for this referral form in the mail!
