Susquehanna University's Official Monthly APAN E-Newsletter * April 2003 Edition 1
Dear APAN partners:
My name is Scott Haldeman and I am a freshman at Susquehanna University. I began
my SU journey this year, and already it has been quite a trip. I am an active
student on campus serving as vice president of the Student Activities Committee,
singing in Gospel Choir, participating as a member of the Brotherhood, as well
as contributing to the Men’s Track Team. My fellow classmates have selected
me to represent them as class president, and it is because of this position
that I have the opportunity to address you.
The year began with tons of work and study unfamiliar to me, and many other
first year students, before our arrival at SU. Yet with it comes a childlike
energy and enthusiasm that made any feat possible. I am fortunate to have been
elected class president. This is partially because the position was hotly contested,
but mainly because I still have this energy and enthusiasm, and I will use these
qualities to continually take on new challenges. I find that the SU environment
provides endless opportunities so that with each new day I grow more excited
about the next. Each day brings with it a greater prospect for success than
the next.
Thank you for allowing me to tell my story and become a part of your lives;
it is with your traditions, legacies, and standards that I now live mine.
Best Regards,
Scott Halderman
Meg Finley '85 Flournoy, is our first APAN Member of the Month. Meg is married to Wayne Flournoy, and has two sons, Mark and Paul. Meg’s ties with Susquehanna go way back; her first recollections of SU come from her mother and her aunt, both alums of SU. Following in their footsteps, Meg attended SU, majoring in Political Science. She did not have an interest in attending law school, she chose her major because she “just enjoyed reading about the American government, political theory, and international relations.”
After graduating from SU, Meg started her career by working in the Office of Admissions at Muhlenberg College. After three years there, she went to graduate school at Lehigh University for Counseling Psychology. “One of the aspects of Susquehanna that meant a lot to me,” Meg recalls, “was the volunteer programs, and project houses.” With this in mind, she created a community service program at Muhlenberg, and worked there for six years as Director of Community Service. She is currently teaching two courses in Sociology at Muhlenberg, and is a Career Counselor at Lafayette College three days a week. It is easy to understand why Meg has such strong feelings for Susquehanna. She says, “I am motivated by working with students at a liberal arts college.”
This interest for speaking with students and advising them of the benefits of a liberal arts education, in addition to wanting to support Susquehanna, attracts Meg to the APAN program. Besides enjoying college fairs and contacting accepted students, Meg also loves hosting the freshmen Summer Send-Offs with Pam Marino '81 Weis.
This
edition's Outstanding Performer is senior Matt
Deamer. Matt, a member of the Men’s Track and Field team, qualified for
this year’s U.S. National Track and Field Championships. He also qualified
for the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field trials, when he recorded a javelin
throw of 236 feet, 1½ inches at the Washington and Lee Invitational on
March 15th. The throw, which broke his own school record of 226 feet, 1 inch,
is the third longest in Division III history!
Matt , a 2001 All-American who hails from Lewistown, PA, has now qualified for
the Division III National Championships for four consecutive years! Matt has
two goals for the rest of the season: to win the Division III National Championship
in the javelin, and to break the all-time Division III record of 242 feet, 6
inches which was set by Kris Theriault of Fitchburg State in 1995.
Just months after Our Lady Peace, one
of the biggest rock bands of 2002, played a huge concert in Weber Chapel,
more big acts are pouring into SU. On February 22nd, three members of the
popular MTV series “The Real World,” visited the SU campus to
share their experiences of living in front of the camera and overcoming different
trials and tribulations. "The Real World" follows a group of six
or seven twenty-somethings from entirely different backgrounds who live together
for six months while having their lives taped.
Chris, Theo, and Aneesa, from “The Real World: Chicago” version
of the show, kicked off the evening in Weber Chapel talking about their experiences
and conducted a question and answer session with the audience. Afterwards,
they went down to Charlie’s Coffeehouse for a more intimate setting,
where they signed autographs, ate nachos, and hung out with SU students. The
trio was refreshingly honest and incredibly entertaining, making it a fun
time for all.
SU is also gearing up for April performances by three more huge entertainers! On April 5th (the night of the Accepted Student Open House), Dan Nichols, known as the "Jewish Dave Matthews," will perform at Charlie's Coffee House. On April 12th, Dave Chappelle and Jim Breuer will bring their stand-up comedy acts to Weber Chapel Auditorium. Chappelle is the hottest name in the comedy world right now, as his new show on Comedy Central, “The Dave Chappelle Show,” has become a smash hit. Breuer, the former Saturday Night Live and MTV star, also has a new show in the works for Comedy Central! SU is abuzz waiting for the duo!
The Spring College Fair season is upon us! If you were assigned to cover a fair you should receive your materials about a week before the date of the fair. If you do not, please let us know immediately so that we can ensure that you receive them on time. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to help cover the college fairs ...without your help, none of this would be possible!
Thank you to everyone who volunteered for this program, whether you were a letter writer, caller or e-mailer. We are confident that your participation will make a great difference in this year's yield and we look forward to an even more successful Adopt-A-Student program next year.
