A Word From Pam

As we were planning our fall travel this year, we realized there would be a number of good college night programs that we, as a staff, just could not attend. It was APAN to the rescue! Your response to our requests for help was just overwhelming. In spite of our valiant attempt to make a flourishing program run smoothly, we still encountered some “glitches” in the college night system. To those of you who experienced one of those glitches, I apologize. We are already making changes for the spring and next fall and we have taken your suggestions and concerns into account.

As I looked back on the travel season, I realized one person was missing this year. Neil Potter always did the Franklin County College Night in Chambersburg for us. It was familiar territory for him and he loved promoting SU to the prospective students he recruited that night (he also loved eating at the McDonald’s in Chambersburg – I think he had his own special table!). I rarely even had to ask Neil to do the program – he would just send me a note that said, “Sign me up.”

By now, most of you know that Neil passed away this summer. At his funeral, his family and friends had displayed the most wonderful mementos of his life. But for those of us “old-timers” in the Admissions Office, what we also remember are Neil’s contributions and commitment to a fledgling APAN program and the University Admissions Committee. He took his role in those very seriously. And, we miss his frequent visits to the office. He always said “just passing through.” But then he would stop and talk about who he took trout fishing or looking for hellgrammites and what a great time they had had. And, recently, he had been particularly proud of the press he was getting for his Chemistry Road Show. He always made sure he brought in the newspaper clippings to show us. He was a great recruiter and supporter of our efforts.

Thanks to all of you for your efforts this fall and to everyone who has volunteered to assist us with our recruitment activities this year. A good recruitment year is not just about the work of the Admissions staff – it takes students, faculty, coaches, and you, our alumni and parents, to put it all together.

SU Fall Sports in Playoffs

  • SU Women’s Field Hockey, with a 17-3 record and ranked 7th in the nation, has earned an at-large bid to the Division III National Championships! The Lady Crusaders lost in the Commonwealth Conference championship game to Messiah, 2-1, but will travel to Skidmore College, in New York, to face fourth-ranked College of New Jersey.

  • SU Women’s Soccer advanced to the Commonwealth Conference championship game for the first time in the programs history, where they unfortunately also lost to Messiah. It was the first time in Women’s Soccer’s history that they advanced to the playoffs, and then went on to win their first ever playoff game, 2-1, against Elizabethtown! They finished with an 8-8-3 record.

  • Both Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams advanced to Regional Championships, being held at Salisbury College in Maryland. The top three teams and the next seven fastest individuals advance to the National Championships in Minnesota. Junior Ryan Gleason advanced to Nationals last year and is hopeful to repeat the feat.

SU Outstanding Performer of the Month

Senior Carolyn Gathman is November’s Outstanding Performer. Carolyn, a singer and acoustic guitar player, was signed by USAgency Entertainment in August to a record contract. She recently performed at Charlie’s Coffeehouse to celebrate the release of her debut CD, “Another Hour.” The CD features 10 songs, all original compositions. She has gained quite a reputation in a short period of time: both Penn State University and Bucknell University, among others, have booked shows for her! If you are interested in hearing more about Carolyn and samples of her music, you can visit her Web site at www.carolyngathman.com.

    Campus Hot Spot

This Month’s Hot Spot is Charlie’s Café, located on the lower level of the Degenstein Campus Center. Charlie’s is loved by students for innumerable reasons. If you don’t feel like going off campus it is the best place to stop and get a quick bite to eat: soft pretzels, nachos, muffins, coffee, espresso, hot chocolate—you name it, Charlie’s has it! And for a cheap price too! As long as you have a dollar you can snack at Charlie’s. It also provides lots of entertainment for students, whether it be watching movies on the big screen TV, listening to local musicians or fellow SU students jam, or playing Duck Hunt on the original Nintendo!

  • SU Prepares to Rock

Friday, November 22nd, the rock band Our Lady Peace is coming to Weber Chapel Auditorium! Never heard of Our Lady Peace? They currently have two singles on the radio, “Somewhere Out There” and “Gravity,” and are touring Europe this month! They will follow-up their SU performance with a performance for MTV at the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame!

    News & Reminders

Remember that after you cover a college fair, PLEASE return your evaluation form and inquiry cards! Many of you returned your forms and cards promptly, and this is greatly appreciated. However, we still have not received forms or cards from a number of you. If you are one of those few please take the time to fill out the form and return the cards…they are very valuable tools for connecting with high schools and prospective students, and they do have a bearing on what fairs we choose to cover in the spring and next fall! Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

APAN is ready to expand again! The Adopt-A-Student program is in the works! Thanks to all of you for responding to our information request—the responses will provide valuable for this program. More information is coming soon! If you have not yet sent us your current job title and employer, please e-mail it ASAP!

Filmmaker Sedika Mojadidi will be at SU on Sunday, November 17th to discuss her film “Kabul, Kabul.” The film recounts Mojadidi’s return to her native country Afghanistan after a 23 year absence, and the problems the nation is currently facing.

Congratulations to David Pearce, a DJ for SU’s radio station WSQU. The AirPlay International Awards, for small label and independent artists, named Pearce the Radio Personality of the Year! Pearce hosts his show, “Pure as Stone Country Jamboree,” from 9:00 am until noon every Saturday.

Thank you to all those who helped cover fairs this fall. 150 fairs were covered, and all because of your tremendous efforts! Thank you so much, and keep up the great work! Additionally, those members who had hoped to cover fairs this fall but did not receive an assignment will have first crack at the Spring Fairs!
