It is almost hard to believe that we are now in the midst of October! The leaves
are already changing, and it is only a matter of days until jack-o-lanterns
and trick-or-treaters will be lining the streets. It is truly an exciting time
of year! Campus is charged with that excitement as well, as students participate
in a number of annual October events. This year SU’s homecoming weekend will be held from October 4th to 6th.
This was my first chance to participate in the homecoming festivities and let
me begin by saying what a fun time it was for all! This was also my first real
chance to interact with alumni face-to-face, and while I watched large groups
of alumni return to the University and walk about the campus, it became clear to
me what a deep love and appreciation so many have for SU.
Sunday night, after the weekend was finished, I was sitting at my desk doing
work for APAN and for the first time I truly realized what a wonderful program
APAN is. First of all, it demonstrates that strong love and bond you have
with the school, ties so strong that you sacrifice your free time and energy
in order to give back to SU. At the same time, think of what an impression
it must make on prospective students to have such enthusiastic representatives
of the University! Many schools only utilize admissions counselors, and while
they promote their schools to the best of their abilities, they do not have
that true passion and understanding of what it is like to be a student there,
an understanding that only alumni or SU parents such as yourselves can provide! I applaud you and thank you for all of
your efforts!

The Top Ten Things SU Looks for in Applicants
The following is a list of a few of the more important factors that the Office of Admissions takes into account when looking at candidates for admission:
1. A high school curriculum that challenges the student.
- Students should demonstrate a willingness to challenge themselves with
a rigorous
program of studies.
2. Grades that represent a strong effort and an upward trend.
- Grades should show an upward trend over the years. Slightly lower grades
in a
rigorous program are preferred to all A’s in less challenging coursework.
3. Solid scores on the SAT and/or the ACT or solid writing samples if
the student qualifies for the "Write-Option."
4. Passionate involvement in a few activities that demonstrates leadership
and initiative.
- Depth, not breadth, of experience is most important.
5. A well-written essay that provides insight into the students unique
personality, values, and goals.
- The essay should be thoughtful and highly personal, while also demonstrating
careful and
well-constructed writing.
6. Special talents or experiences that will contribute to a well-rounded
student body.
- Anything that makes a student unique and adds to the diversity of the
campus.
7. Letters of recommendation from teachers and guidance counselors that
provide evidence of integrity, special skills and positive character traits.
- Students should request recommendations from teachers who respect their
work in an
academic discipline.
8. Students should demonstrate enthusiasm, that may be exhibited in an
interview, towards attending SU.
- Colleges want to know, that if admission is offered, the likelihood
the student will enroll.
9. Out-of-school experiences, including work and community service, that
illustrates responsibility, dedication and development of areas of interest.
- Work or other meaningful use of free time can demonstrate maturity.
10. Supplemental recommendations by adults who have had significant direct
contact with the student.
- Letters from coaches or supervisors in long-term work or volunteer activities
are valuable.
This list was taken from a 2001 survey of the members of the Independent
Educational Consultants Association.
Senior Carly Kellet, daughter of APAN
members Denise and Bruce Kellet, and Junior Tara McHugh are this month's Outstanding
Performer(s). The two led the women's tennis team to a 10-2 record, the second
best record in the program's history! McHugh finished the regular season a perfect
12-0, breaking the Crusader regular season record for wins. Kellet finished
a stellar 8-1! Both women will participate in the MAC Championships on October
18th and 19th at Lebanon Valley College.
