Susquehanna University's Official Monthly APAN E-Newsletter * February 2003
Dear APAN partners:
It's a pleasure to have a chance to thank you for the great work you do on Susquehanna's
behalf.
As Vice President of University Relations, I can tell you that your efforts
are among the most important university relations activities that take place
each year. You are on the front line with prospective students and their families,
talking to them about the life-changing, four-year experience Susquehanna University
offers. As someone who has lived that experience - be it as student, parent,
or both! - you bring to those conversations a blend of knowledge and enthusiasm
that encourages so many people to take a closer look.
As I have met Susquehanna graduates over the years, it has regularly struck
me that so many enduring friendships took root on our campus. It's amazing that
the relatively quick work done by our Residence Life staff each summer, assigning
first-year students as roommates, sets in motion a series of lifelong relationships.
We appreciate very much your role in helping students take those first steps
in finding their way here. Again, thank you.
Sincerely,
Ronald A. Cohen
Vice President for University Relations
An outstanding music department. A football
program steeped in a tradition of winning and excellence. A liberal arts university
with an excellent business program. A “college for friendly students”
who are “unusually caring, outgoing and supportive.” A university
that delivers the most “bang-for-the buck.” What university can
offer all this, and more? Why, none other than Susquehanna!
In a guidebook to higher education titled "The College Finder: Choosing
a College That’s Right for You", by Steven Antonoff, Susquehanna
was cited multiple times for exemplary programs in a wide range of areas.
Besides SU’s outstanding music department, business program, football
program, amazingly friendly student-body, and incredible value, SU was also
cited for its plethora of volunteer opportunities, its wonderful new dorms,
and top-notch new student orientation program.
Antonoff, the former dean of admissions at the University of Denver, compiled
his information from surveys of over 300 high school counselors and educational
consultants, student queries, interviews with college personnel and articles
on higher education.
February’s
Outstanding Performer is Ryan Gleason. Gleason, a junior on the Men’s
Track and Field team, broke the 5,000 meter record twice in the month of February!
He first broke the record on February 1st at the Bucknell Bison Open. His
time of 15:09.85 smashed the twenty year-old school record of 15:10.70, set
by Greg Pealer in 1983. Gleason, though, was not finished. On February 15th
at the Bucknell Winter Classic, Gleason broke his own school record in the
5,000, running a time of 15:09.16!
With the M.A.C. Indoor Track and Field Championships looming March 1st, Gleason
has positioned himself to win a number of events. He is currently ranked first
in the conference in 1,500 meters and the 5,000 meters and, if he performs
well at the M.A.C. Championships he will advance to the Indoor National Championships,
this year held in Indiana.
From March 6th until March 10th , the Susquehanna orchestra will hit the road and head out on their 2003 S.U. Educational Orchestra Tour! Under the direction of Jennifer Sacher-Wiley, the orchestra will present an original, innovative program, “Outside the Music Box.” The program is, in part, a tribute to and a celebration of the new music and art facility at Susquehanna University. The story is about an art student and a music student who argue about using a practice space until the "Queen of the Muses" teaches them about the inherent connections between visual and aural expression. Audience members will enjoy the multi-media dimension to this production, as computer generated color and sketching enhances the music. The show will feature the world premiere of a new work, "Color Concerto" by S.U. Theory and Composition faculty Dr. Patrick Long. Jennifer Sacher-Wiley will be the violin soloist for the premiere, enhanced by computer generated visual imaging.
Performances will take place at: Selinsgrove Schools; Lewisburg Schools; a community concert at Arrowhead Elementary School in Collegeville, PA; Gwynedd Mercy Academy; Hoover Elementary School in Langhorne, PA; a community concert at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Harleysville, PA; Gwynedd Mercy College; Degenstein Campus Theatre.
If one of the above concerts is in your
area, the orchestra would love not only your attendance, but your assistance
in spreading the word! We have press releases concerning the concert for either
a community newspaper or a school newsletter. If you know of a local source
that would be interested in carrying the press release, please e-mail us at
APAN@susqu.edu and we will forward you a copy of the press release!
Congratulations to the Men's Basketball
team on winning their first Commonwealth Conference regular season championship
