APAN Member
of the Month: Jack Villella '72, Parent of Jared '03
Editor’s
Note: The APAN Member of the Month section is a new addition to The Pipeline.
Each month we will feature individual APAN members who have contributed significantly
to the expansion and success of the APAN program over the past year.
May's APAN Member of the Month is Jack Villella, Class of ’72. Jack first
learned of SU when then-football coach Jim Hazlett recruited him. Upon visiting
the “beautiful” and “comfortable” campus, he decided
SU was the place he wanted to spend the next four years. Jack, a marketing major,
kept a busy schedule during his time at SU, playing football, working at our
radio station WQSU, and joining the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Jack graduated
with not only his degree, but with “…good friends that I still keep
in touch with today.”
Jack lives in Sinclairville, N.Y. with his wife Christine, a high school health
and physical education teacher, and son Jared, who graduated from SU this past
weekend with a degree in public relations. Jack works as the manager of a ski
area in western New York, and also owns and operates a food and beverage venture.
“My family,” Jack states, “was in the restaurant business
and it has always been of interest to me.”
After Jared enrolled in SU, Jack decided he “…wanted to give a little
back to the place that provided me with so many great memories.” The result
has been an overwhelming involvement in APAN, especially in the college fair
program, where he volunteers a great deal of his time. In fact, he explains,
“I think I most enjoy going to the college fairs and exposing students
to the possibilities at SU and just trying to help them with a major decision
in their lives.”
SU Outstanding
Performer of the Month: Lindajoy Golding '03
The Outstanding Performer
for the month of May is Lindajoy Golding '03, who played the feature role of
Joan of Arc in "The Lark," the SU theater department’s spring
production. Golding graduated from SU this past Sunday with a degree in Theatre
with an emphasis in performance and a minor in Spanish. She has performed in
many shows throughout her four years at SU, including: "The Perfect Ganesh,""The
Grapes of Wrath,""The Real Inspector Hound," "The Little
Foxes,""Macbeth,""Spirit of Life," and "The Country
Wife."
Of her difficult role as Joan, Golding says, “As a performer, I felt extremely
privileged to be chosen…Rehearsals were long, and both physically and
emotionally draining, but I enjoyed the challenge. One of the things I really
loved about this play is that it also challenged me spiritually. Joan's faith
became a source of inspiration and strength in my own personal walk with God.”
Golding not only challenged herself on the stage, but maintained a challenging
schedule off the stage as well. She worked for two years as a Resident Assistant,
and was very active in The Sisterhood, the leadership honor society Omicron
Delta Kappa, the foreign language honor society Phi Sigma Iota, and the SU Gospel
Choir.

Extra, Read All About It...SU Students in the News
Two Susquehanna senior athletes have recently had their achievements
acknowledged in major sporting publications. Giulia Umile, goalie on the Women’s
Lacrosse team, is one of eight Division III goalies profiled in the online
goalie magazine GoalieNation.com. Umile, a three-time first team
All Middle Atlantic Conference selection and two-time member of the Intercollegiate
Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Metro Regional All-American
team, is included in the “Who’s Hot in College” section.
With a 43-18 career record, a career 8.18 goals against average, 743 career
saves, and a career .584 save percentage, Umile holds every SU goalkeeping
record!
After being named as the Outstanding Performer of the month in the March edition
of the Pipeline, Matt Deamer followed by being featured in the "Faces
in the Crowd" section of the April 21st edition of Sports Illustrated.
At the Washington and Lee Invitational, Deamer broke his own school record
in the javelin with a throw of 236 feet, 1½ inches, the second longest
throw in Division III history. The throw not only qualifies him for this year’s
USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, but also provisionally qualifies
him for next year’s U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials.

of working with our designer on the shirts. We anticipate having them ready

purchase one!
Adopt-A-Student Program Update
The Adopt-A-Student program was a tremendous success! 1102 students were
contacted via phone and e-mail and every student who was accepted received
a congratulatory letter as well. Of the 1102 students contacted, 293 will
be joining the Susquehanna family this fall, approximately a 27% yield rate!
Everyone should be extremely proud for making this program a success! We
will not be sending out any more e-mail updates about withdrawals. If you
have a question concerning a particular student's status, please contact
Dave for an update.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered
for this program, whether you were a letter writer, caller or e-mailer!
