Boylan Bottling Company
Where are you employed and what kind of work do you do?
I’m coordinator of graphic design and marketing at Boylan Bottling Company, a super premium beverage company. I design everything from new seasonal packaging to retail point-of-sale pieces.
What is the best thing about being a designer?
Representing the Boylan brand. Boylan is something I believe in and connect with, so designing for it comes naturally. Each brand has an individual identity, and as a designer you’re responsible for conveying that to the public. It’s also incredibly gratifying when I see something I created out there in my every day life.
How did the graphic design program at SU prepare you for the real world?
The fact that it is a relatively small and interactive program really helped me. I thrive when I’m challenged, and if I was just an anonymous number in a larger program I don’t think I would have been as successful in achieving my goals. It’s also nice that we were taught to critique and evaluate our peers and their work throughout the creative process — because that’s how it works in the real world. Design is always a collaborative process, and it helps to get the opinions of your fellow designers as early as possible in the process.
What are your favorite memories of the graphic design program at SU?
The Graphic Design Mac Studio holds some of my fondest memories of Susquehanna. You develop a real closeness and respect for your classmates in there, not to mention a lot of great friendships.
What advice do you have for someone choosing a college design program?
I had no idea what I was getting myself in to when I applied to the design program at Susquehanna. I’m not sure I even knew exactly what a graphic designer did, but the field intrigued me. You don’t have to know exactly what you are looking for in a school, but you should have a sense of where you’ll fit in. The small class sizes and group continuity at Susquehanna felt right to me. So, when you’re scanning through schools and programs, make note of what is most important to you.
