New York City
What kind of work are you doing now?
I’m production manager at Rolling Stone Magazine in downtown Manhattan, a position I previously held at Glamour, after beginning my career at New York magazine — a job I got within a week or two of graduation. My job requires me to work with the creative team to design the page layouts, preparing the pages for proofing, and make certain that the magazine properly gets to press.
What is the best thing about being a designer?
Having something visual and tangible that you can put your name on and share with other people. Knowing that hundreds of thousands of people are seeing my work in one of the world’s greatest magazines is very rewarding. The casual work environment and dress code at Rolling Stone is also a nice perk.
How did the graphic design program at SU prepare you for the real world?
By giving me the right foundation to be a successful designer. Graphic Design is not just a profession as much as it is a passion and way of life — something you live and breathe in your spare time as well. The Susquehanna program also stressed the importance of working quickly and meeting strict deadlines, which is a very important aspect of working in this business at any level — but especially when serving as production manager at a prestigious magazine.
What are your favorite memories of the graphic design program at SU?
The countless nights in the Mac studio spent getting to know my classmates better, working together, commiserating together. Those long hours prepped me for working as part of a design team. I will also never forget some of Mark Fertig’s comments and stories. Make him show you his high school yearbook.
What advice do you have for someone choosing a college design program?
Don’t take it lightly. Invest yourself fully in your work and take it very seriously, but still have fun — that’s the whole point after all. If you didn't want to have fun in your profession you'd probably be on the accounting department’s web page right now. Always stay current with design trends and pop culture because they are constantly changing, and it is vitally important to keep up with them. Don't be afraid of criticism — learn from it and get stronger. Remember that inspiration for a design can spring from anything or anyone.
