DEFINING STREAM REACH IN MIDDLE CREEK

USING ECOLOGICAL PARAMETERS

Laura Craig and Jack R. Holt

ABSTRACT: Physical, chemical and biological parameters were used in an attempt to define stream reach in Middle Creek, Snyder County, PA. Ten sites along the stream were sampled, two of the sites were in the existing reservoirs, Walker and Faylor Lakes. Physical and chemical parameters were measured using standard methods. Diatom samples were collected at the sites and have not yet been analyzed. Current results show that most physical parameters exhibit temporal fluctuations, and Acid Neutralizing Capacity exhibits longitudinal variation as well. Further investigation of diatom communities, as well as chemical and physical parameters, will be conducted during the Spring of 2000 in an attempt to define stream reach. The ecological patterns exhibited by Middle Creek will be assessed in terms of reservoirs (both existing and dismantled), land use practices, and other influences within the watershed.
