Introduction | Faculty | Courses | Major | Minor | Department Web Site

International studies is an interdisciplinary program designed for students who are interested in issues beyond the borders of the United States. Students may focus on a region of the world (Europe, Asia, or the developing world) or may choose a topical focus (diplomacy, comparative cultural studies, sustainable development, or international trade and development). Students take courses in a variety of academic departments, achieving a significant degree of understanding of their region or topic. The international studies major prepares students for work in government, international organizations, and business, as well as for advanced study in law or graduate school.

Off-Campus Study Opportunities. Students majoring in international studies are required to participate in an off-campus international experience, and those minoring in the program are strongly encouraged to do so. In recent years, international studies students have traveled to countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Germany, Austria, Costa Rica, and China. The Washington Semester Program also offers considerable opportunities for international studies students. The program, sponsored by American University in Washington, D.C., includes programs integrating study of international issues with internships. Programs include conflict resolution and sustainable development, and offer three-week study-abroad opportunities.

Honors. To graduate with honors, international studies majors must:

  • maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the program and 3.25 overall,
  • request admission to the program at the beginning of the senior seminar/capstone course,
  • complete and publicly present an honors-quality project in the spring of their senior year.
