OFFR:210 Crossing Cultures Through Literature.
This course explores notions of cultural interpretation and difference through study of literary texts in English translation. By comparing multiple English translations of a single text, students reflect on ethnocentric assumptions with respect to their own cultural filter and its influence on their interpretation of the cultures in which they were immersed. Finally, students consider the responsibilities inherent in translating their own experience to others. Prerequisite: Successful completion of a semester-long study program or instructor approval. Same as LANG:210. 4 SH. CC: Cross-Cultural Reflection, Ethics Intensive.
