Service-Learning

This year’s SU CASA~Belize and PLUS (Philippines: Learning, Understanding, and Service) trips took place in May.

The SU CASA~Belize team focused on providing free medical clinics for the residents of areas in which they worked. The group of 10 students that went was mainly comprised of students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, under the direction of April Black, RN, Administrative Director of SU's Health Center.

They also took some time within their service work to enjoy the beautiful surroundings in Belize. Anyone interested in applying for the 2008 trip can contact Nancy Musser, Administrative Assistant to the Chaplain.

The annual PLUS trip is an opportunity to be immersed in another culture while working to improve the lives of people who do not enjoy the prosperity we in the United States take for granted.

The trip is an academic course on the history, culture, religion, language, and food of the Philippines (two credits, Spring semester) coupled with an on-site, service learning course (two credits, which is taught and supervised by SU professor Dr. Jeffrey K. Mann, with lectures by local clergy, professors, NGO staff, and other citizens of the Philippines.

Participants travel to the Philippines and spend two weeks immersed into life in the provinces of Batangas and Cavite and the city of Manila.
