Archbishop Oscar Romero
Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador was assassinated 25 years ago this month. Late in life, Romero had become a companion of the poor in his country and a fierce defender of their human rights. For this, he was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 ... and gunned down by a death squad while saying mass a year later.
There will be a campus observance of the martyrdom of this "Prophet to the Americas" on Tuesday, March 22.
