Servant Summer 2006: Exploring Your Life Directions
Have you ever wondered:
- How to identify and respond to urgent needs in God's world?
- How to discover your God-given gifts as clues to God's calling?
- How to develop action steps oriented toward your life direction?
- How your Baptism gives your life direction?
If so, please consider a summer of service...
Who? Open to all students in colleges and universities related to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (such as SU) regardless of the students' religious affiliation.
What? Young adult servant leadership summer opportunities are available for Lutherans ages 18-24. A limited number of sites will be offered.
Where? Individualized community service projects in Lutheran social service agencies and similar settings along the East coast.
Why? To learn what it means to apply faith to daily life. Participants will have a mentor who will serve as a role model and resource for theological reflection.
When? Orientation week will be the last week of May with servant projects beginning in June. A wrap-up will be August 8-9. Application deadline is April 15.
How much? Participants will be paid $2,400 for the summer, the hosting organization will provide housing and meals, and a travel allowance will be provided to cover a portion of the travel costs.

Faith Active in Love: Summer Events at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary
Sponsored by Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, "Faith Active in Love" is a series of three week-long sessions in the San Francisco Bay Area that immerse participants in experiential learning and theological reflection regarding a distinct justice issue each week. Students select one of the weeks and engage in the complexities of a particular topic by:
- Listening to people affected
- Visiting innovative non-profit and community organizations
- Talking with top theologians at the Graduate Theological Union
- Participating in hands-on activities
- Discussing the issue with one another in small groups
- Reflecting theologically on our Christian response
Week 1 – Homelessness June 11 – 16, 2006: Spend time with people who are or have been homeless; visit soup kitchens, shelters, and transitional housing; encounter some of the causes of homelessness and the challenges of overcoming them.
Week 2 – Worker Justice June 18 – 23, 2006: Talk with workers struggling to earn enough to support themselves and their families; observe workers' centers, legal clinics, and labor organizations; learn about migrant workers' issues, unions, and minimum vs. living wages.
Week 3 – Environmental Issues June 25 – 30, 2006: Listen to activists working to preserve the ecosystem; contribute time to community gardens, endangered marshes, and restoration organizations; gather knowledge about pollution, conservation, and land use.
