Deacon Notes
From the Deacon of Worship:
This year, February 21 marks the beginning of the 40 day season of Lent.
It will be observed at an ecumenical service with imposition of ashes in Weber Chapel at 4:30 PM.
University Chaplain Mark Radecke and St. Pius X pastor, Fr. Ted Keating will preside,
and the University Organist and University Chorale will provide special music.
Did you know:
- That “Lent” derives from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “springtime”? Like spring, Lent is a time for preparation, planting and growth.
- That ashes denote both mortality (“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”) and cleansing, ashes being a scouring agent in the absence of soap?
- That the 40 days of Lent do not include Sundays, which are always feasts celebrating the resurrection?
From the Deacon of Service:
The theme for this year's Lutheran Youth Day is "Don’t Let Anyone Look Down on You Because You Are Young" and it will be held at SU on April 14th.
I will need volunteers that are interested in being small group leaders and spending a great afternoon with kids from all over the state,
as well as some people who would be interested in setting up. Volunteers get a free t-shirt!
The Pool Boys will be the featured band at Lutheran Youth Day. They will be performing at the event and then will be giving a free concert. More details to come!

From the Deacon of Spiritual Nurture:
Coming up this semester the Chaplain’s office is running a retreat on February 9-11th. Last semester the retreat was lots of fun and a great escape from school.
This semester there will be a focus on being grateful for what you’ve got. If you’d like to go there is a sign-up on Nancy Musser’s door--check it out!
Also, there is a prayer group that will be continuing all semester. It works as an e-mail prayer chain so there are no meetings or obligations outside of finding
the time to pray for the world, the nation, and more local causes during your week. If you want to participate send an e-mail to
Amy Troxell and you’ll be added.
