Habitat for Humanity News

The Susquehanna University Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is continuing to have a successful year. The club has continued its efforts to help with homes with the Union/Snyder County Habitat for Humanity, raises funds for sponsoring its own house and raising awareness of homelessness issues in the local area and around the world.

Recently Habitat for Humanity was honored at SU CHEERS, a university celebration of student volunteers. Habitat for Humanity was chosen as Project House of the Year for its outstanding work as a volunteer organization, member involvement, and overall commitment to bettering the community.

In the fall semester, members of SU Habitat for Humanity worked with a build site in Milton. Members spent their Saturday mornings working to rebuild the burnt down home, helping with the very beginnings of building a home. The chapter will be continuing to work on the house in the spring semester in addition to helping out with other volunteer activities in the local community.

In both the fall and spring semesters, Habitat held their annual Midterm Midnight Pancakes Sale at Susquehanna University, providing freshly made pancakes to all the late night studiers during midterm’s week. Both sales were very successful, with all proceeds going towards the chapters building fund.

In addition to the pancake sale, the chapter also held a party raffle basket sale in the fall, with prizes for the basket being donated by local businesses. Members sold tickets to friends and had a table in the Degenstein Campus Center to entice other students to help out with the fundraiser. Habitat also had an Easter basket raffle prior to Easter Break, which included the chance to win an I-pod Shuffle.

For Spring Break in March, ten students from the chapter participated in a Collegiate Challenge trip to Statesboro, Georgia. Click the Collegiate Challenge link to read more!

Additionally for the spring, the chapter has formed a team of ten members to participate in Susquehanna’s first campus-sponsored Relay for Life race, and will be donating funds to help sponsor the team.

The main even for the spring is Act!Speak!Build! Week which is taking place April 14th-21st. SU Habitat for Humanity will be handing out promotional material such as flyers and stickers provided by Habitat for Humanity International for the week of homelessness awareness. The club will also be hosting a speaker on homelessness and showing a movie that focuses on homelessness during the course of the week.

Plans are also being made for a “Lego House Competition” to be held as a part of the university’s Greek Week celebration that will be going on at the same time. Each fraternity and sorority on campus will be able to build and sponsor a Lego house of their own design that will be voted on by the entire campus. The winning house will be chosen by the largest amount of money students from across the campus put to vote for their favorite house. All proceeds from the events will go towards the chapter building fund.

Act!Speak!Build! Week will then end with the Campus Campout Celebration to be held on Saturday, April 21st. Groups of students will be able to rent a plot of land on Smith Lawn at the university and spend the night camping out. There will be food, games, and entertainment provided for all campers and it will be a great way for students to remember the millions of people around the world who spend every night without a home over their heads.

SU Habitat for Humanity is continuing to gain new and enthusiastic members who are more than willing to help the organization in all its efforts. It is looking to continue all its efforts and enthusiasm into future years.
