Charlie's is a student-run, non-alcoholic coffeehouse and entertainment venue for students at Susquehanna University. Charlie's is located in the lower level of the Degenstein Campus Center. Five Susquehanna students make up the management team that runs the Coffeehouse. All employees are students and one faculty member advises the management team. The purpose of Charlie's Coffeehouse is to provide a non-alcoholic alternative for the students of Susquehanna University. Entertainment is scheduled for almost every night of the week, free of charge. The Programming Manager schedules anything from live bands to craft nights. The Charlie's management team works with the Student Activities Committee to show new movies twice a week. Other events include open mic night, karaoke, football games on the big screen TV and free chicken wings. Charlie's also hosts poetry reading, art shows and student performer night. Once a semester, Charlie's gives away a gift to a student customer. Students enter the contest by purchasing an item from Charlie's and submitting an entry form. Past give-a-ways include an all inclusive trip for two to Cancun and an iPod with accessories. Charlie's, named after Susquehanna University benefactor, Charles Degenstein, was opened October 2, 1987. It was originally named Charlie's pub, created to keep Susquehanna students on-campus during the weekends. Back then, it was used as a non-alcoholic dance club. It was rented by the campus for various parties and theme nights. Charlie's Pub worked with the Crusader Castle, (currently Benny's Bistro), a student-run snack bar, to provide food for student events. In 1996, the name was changed from Charlie's Pub to Charlie's Coffeehouse. At this time, Charlie's changed from a non-alcoholic pub to a coffeehouse. Charlie's programming and décor also changed to create a coffeehouse atmosphere. Our logo communicates a few of the mentalities behind Charlie's: It is in the familiar shape of a coffee ring, but also reflects through its colors a night time feel as Charlie's is primarily an evening establishment. A coffee ring is a homely image that shows that you have stayed a while--a warm and welcoming feeling associated with Charlie's. |
