Joseph Priestley House
Joseph Priestley House was the American home of Joseph Priestley, an English theologian, scientist, natural philosopher, teacher, linguist, historian and important figure of the Anglo-American enlightenment.
A rural Georgian manor home built by Priestley in Northumberland County in 1794, the house holds what may be the first scientific research laboratory in the United States .
It was in this laboratory, designed by Priestley, where carbon monoxide was first described.
Priestley lived in the home until his death in 1804. It is furnished with authentic period objects, as well as exhibits presenting Priestley’s accomplishments and varied interests.
