Officers
Officers of the Committee for Teaching and Learning consist of a Committee Chair,
Recording Secretary, Coordinator, Coordinator-Elect, and two Subcommittee Chairs.
Coordinator
The Office of the Coordinator is administrative
in origin. The Coordinator is appointed by and reports to the Provost
Dean of the Faculty upon the advice of the Committee on Teaching and
Learning. The Coordinator serves as an ex officio
member of the Committee. The Coordinator's term of office is not less than two nor more than five
years in length, at the discretion of the Provost.
Working closely with the Committee for Teaching and Learning, the Coordinator will
develop programs that encourage and support teaching excellence and innovation.
Duties of the Coordinator Include:
1. Program development and administration;
2. Budget management and grant writing;
3. Networking with teaching centers at other colleges and universities
4. Working with the Faculty Development and Research Committee to administer Central Curriculum
Development Grants;
5. Serving as an ex officio member of Provost's Task Force on Assessment;
6. Serving as an ex officio member of the Committee on Teaching and Learning;
7. Finding and coordinating workshops and supporting attendance to them;
8. Inviting speakers and running workshops at SU;
9. Mentoring new faculty and supporting new faculty mentoring groups;
10. Training peer reviewers for formative purposes;
11. Helping faculty to develop better assessment and evaluation mechanisms;
12. Supporting faculty initiatives that improve retention and foster diversity;
12. Working with the Center for Advanced Technology to support faculty use of IT in the classroom.
Preferred qualifications of the Coordinator include:
1. Vision and energy to develop effective programming for the Center;
2. Administrative experience;
3. Experience administering budgets;
4. Discretion;
5. Tenure;
6. Ability to delegate;
7. Excellence in teaching
The Current Coordinator is Associate Professor of Biology Tammy Tobin-Janzen. She received her bachelor's degree
in animal science from Cornell University in 1985, and her Ph.D. in genetics from Texas A&M
University in 1990. Following post-doctoral work at the National Institutes of Health, she joined
the Susquehanna University faculty in 1994. Her current professional interests include developing
service-based and workshop-style science courses, and studying the adaptation of soil bacterial
communities to the Centralia coal mine fire.
Coordinator-Elect
The Coordinator-Elect is expected to:
1. Work with the Coordinator to develop and support the work of the Center during an apprenticeship period of at least one semester;
2. Fill in, in the absence of the Coordinator;
3. Assume the role of Coordinator when the Coordinator's term expires.

Committee Chair
The Committee Chair is elected by the six elected members of the Faculty on this Committee.
The Committee Chair is expected to:
1. Work with the Coordinator of the Center to develop and run programs that foster excellent teaching at SU;
2. Attend Faculty Development and Instructional Development Subcommittee meetings;
3. Help choose the annual university common reading text;
4. Oversee the process by which the Coordinator is selected.
The current Committee Chair is Assistant Professor of Biology Alissa A. Packer. She holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University. Her areas of teaching interest include ecology and evolution and she teaches courses in plant ecology, plant physiology, and introductory biology. Her research interests include the interaction between temperate tree species and their soil pathogens.
Subcommittee Chairs
The Faculty Development Subcommittee Chair will organize and support activities that:
1. support student learning outside the classroom;
2. increase faculty/staff awareness of student and faculty issues, backgrounds, behaviors;
3. focus on teaching /learning strategies that place an emphasis on the student's responsibility to make appropriate and effective choices in pursuing educational goals, and
4. assist faculty in understanding their roles and responsibilities within the multiple perspectives of academia.
The Instructional Development Subcommittee Chair will organize and support activites that:
1. Provide faculty with venues to learn about and discuss new instructional strategies; and
2. Offer support for development of instructional materials as well as course development.
