POGIL Workshops. POGIL is a classroom and laboratory technique that seeks to simultaneously teach content and key process skills such as the ability to think analytically and work effectively as part of a collaborative team. A POGIL classroom or lab consists of any number of students working in small groups on specially designed guided inquiry materials. These materials supply students with data or information followed by leading questions designed to guide them toward formulation of their own valid conclusions - essentially a recapitulation of the scientific method. The instructor serves as facilitator, observing and periodically addressing individual and classroom-wide needs.

STANDARD WORKSHOPS

These workshops are appropriate for anyone interested in learning about (or learning more about) POGIL. Some of the attendees will have been to a previous 1-day workshop; for others this will be their first exposure to POGIL. We attempt to tailor each workshop to the interests of the attendees; however to give you a sense of what to expect, a list of the typical components of a 3-day workshop is given following the announcements:

Linfield College (McMinnville, OR)
Friday, June 20 through Sunday, June 22
More information and online application:

Washington College (Chestertown, MD)
Tuesday, June 24 through Thursday, June 26

SPECIAL NOTE: The VCU workshop will have an emphasis on the implementation of POGIL in LARGE CLASSES. This will include the use of personal response systems (clickers) and other techniques and technologies that are particularly useful in large classes.

LABORATORY WORKSHOPS

Participants in both of these workshops will be actively engaged in learning about and developing guided inquiry laboratory experiments.

Berry College (Mt. Berry, GA)
Tuesday, July 15 through Thursday, July 17
More information and online application:
http://www.pogil.org/events/Berry1.php

The Berry College workshop will focus on the principles and implementation of POGIL Laboratory experiments.

University of Central Missouri (Warrensburg, MO)
Monday, July 21 through Wednesday, July 23
More information and online application:
http://www.pogil.org/events/UCM.php

The UCM workshop will focus on the principles and implementation of the Science Writing Heuristic approach to laboratory experiments and report writing.

ADVANCED WORKSHOPS: CLASSROOM FACILITATION AND WRITING ACTIVITIES

These workshops are intended for those who have previous experience in implementing POGIL in their classrooms. Those with a firm understanding of the POGIL pedagogy, who have attended one or more prior workshops, and who seek an intense opportunity to deepen their ability to author activities or improve facilitation, should consider attending. Participants will learn about the structure and design of POGIL classroom activities, and will have opportunities to improve existing activities that they have written, or construct new ones, including individualized consultation. The workshop will also include activities designed to enhance the facilitation skills of participants.

St. John Fisher College (Rochester, NY)
Thursday, July 10 through Saturday, July 12

University of Redlands (Redlands, CO)
Monday, July 21 through Wednesday, July 23

ADVANCED POGIL WORKSHOP: IMPROVING PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS WITH IN-CONTEXT POGIL ACTIVITIES

The NSF-supported POGIL-IC project (Process-Oriented Guided-Inquiry Learning - In Context) is producing POGIL activities that are designed to improve proficiency in problem solving by using real world contexts. In this workshop, a brief introduction to POGIL is provided, and a research-based model for the problem-solving process is presented. Participants experience a POGIL-IC activity that follows this model and is structured to improve problem-solving skills. The design of the activity is analyzed, and participants write and practice facilitating activities that they can use in their classrooms. While the focus of the project is on General Chemistry, instructors in any subdiscipline as well as AP high school courses should find this workshop valuable.
