Business Book Bags
“My project is designed to teach children from kindergarten to 4th grade about business. The book bags include three children’s books and discussion prompts focusing on business activities. Essentially, these materials teach young children the concepts of how to handle money and provide instruction in simple concepts such as saving and spending money. These activities will hopefully teach the students effective money handling skills. I have been able to deliver only seven book bags to the Northumber-land Library, but I am currently preparing bags for other libraries around the area. Hopefully by next week, I will be delivering seven bags to the Lewisburg Library.” -Renee Shaffer
Ethics Essay
“Over the past month, the Ethics Essay Contest has grown exponentially. In previous years, the prompts for the contest have been sent through the mail; but this year was different. The prompts, written by Senator Gordner, were sent via email to schools that had participated in previous years. Teachers were contacted directly; and for new schools, guidance counselors were contacted. Prompts were sent out to 109 schools and a total of 198 teachers. The next steps are to wait for essays to arrive in Mr. Cravitz’s mailbox and then to assess them. In December, there will be an awards ceremony for the winners of the contest.” -Sarah Porell
Ashburn’s Animals
“October has been a busy month for Ashburn’s Animals! With 18 members in our project, we are able to get a lot of help fundraising, attending events, and taking care of the animals. In September, the group made a visit to the farm, sparking the interests of many new members. Many of the members have been helping out at events like the Market Street Festival, Agapeland Festival, Tractor Supply, Early Intervention Fun Day (on the farm), Wooley Worm Festival, and the Ard’s Farm pony rides. Even if members do not have experience with animals, they have been willing to learn and help out! Thus far, all of our members have logged a total of 50 hours; and we are hoping to log over 100 hours by the end of the semester! Having such a large group in this organization will allow us to take ad-vantage of helping Ashburn’s in any way possible “ - Emily Stephens
Generation Connection
“We have been visiting the Selinsgrove Senior Center on a weekly basis to spend time with the seniors and to achieve this year’s goals. We came to the conclusion that the main purpose of the Senior Center project was to have a sort of 'generation connection' and help out when needed. Two ideas focus the project: to improve the center itself and, more importantly, to fill that generation gap and arrange for SU students to spend more time with seniors in Selinsgrove. Every Monday night, the center hosts events such as bingo night and jukebox dancing night, events that we would participate in and help with. Also, opportunities such as one-on-one training for technology take place once a week to help with the seniors’ personal goals regarding the computer, phone, etc. The exchange of board and card game knowledge also makes everyone come together and helps people learn new games. Our plan is to help the seniors and the center itself while spending time with
