TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS
SECONDARY EDUCATION
For those students who wish to be certified to teach English in secondary
school (grades 7 through 12), the Department of English, in conjunction
with the Department of Education, offers a teacher certification program.
To enter the program, candidates are required to submit an application
for teaching approval (available in the Education office) to the Committee
of Teacher Education by February of their sophomore year or as soon after
that as possible. At the time of application, the candidate must have at
least a 2.67 overall GPA and a 2.67 English GPA. Students formally apply
to the teacher education program after completing at least 46 hours.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
40 credits of English courses, as follows:
GRAMMAR CREDITS EN:300 English Grammar and the Writing Process 4
LITERATURE (C- or better) EN:290 The Study of Literature 4 EN:350 shakespeare
4 EN:420 Seminar 4 EN:440 Senior Colloquium 4
At least one course in American Literature selected from the following:
EN:220, 260, or 340, 350, 360, 370, 390, 420, 500, (only if topic is in
American Lit.) 2 or 4
A student can fulfill this requirement also by two two-credit American
Literature courses.
ELECTIVES IN LITERATURE AND/OR COMPOSITION (C-or better) 16 or 18
In addition to the courses in literature and composition, the candidate
for teacher certification must successfully complete (C- or better) one
of the following courses from the Communications and Theatre Arts Department:
TH:151 Introduction to Acting/Improvisation TH:352 Oral Interpretation/Performance
Art TH:354 Children's Theatre
33 credits of Education courses, all completed with a grade of C- or
better, as follows:

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
Students who wish to teach in elementary school (grades K through 6)
must major in education. All elementary education majors, however, must
take a concentration of courses in a single discipline, and English is
a discipline they may elect. Those students who elect to concentrate in
English must meet the following requirements:
24 credits of English courses, all completed with the grade of C- or
better, as follows:
CREDITS EN:300 English Grammar and the Writing Process 4
At least one course in American Lit. selected from the following: EN:220,
260, or 340, 350, 360, 370, 390, 420, 500: (only if topic is in American
Literature) 2 or 4
Electives in literature and/or composition 16 or 18
