The Federal Work Study Program (FWS) allows you to earn a portion of your educational expenses through part-time employment on campus. (An application for need-based aid is required to determine your eligibility.) The financial aid staff works with new students individually to place them in jobs in campus offices, labs, food services, library and computer center. Students are paid bi-weekly and earn $7.15 per hour for beginning positions, more as they take on increased responsibility.

Susquehanna University participates in a Federal initiative called the America Reads program. Through it, students paid through the Work Study program tutor children in a local elementary school. If you would like to know more about the details of the program, please call our Financial Aid Office.

The maximum first-year, work study award is $2,250 or the equivalent of 12 hours of work per week during the 30-week academic year. Unlike other sources of financial aid, work study earnings will not be credited directly to your student billing account. You will be responsible for managing your bi-weekly paycheck which must be used for educational purposes.

Students who do not qualify for federal work study, can still work on campus in a "CASH" (non-work study) position. Many employers across campus have budgeted for "cash" student employment. For more information on both FWS and CASH employment, please review the Student Employment Handbook.

Student employment is not just a way to make money. Your job can be a great way to get experience and to earn future job references.

Finally, working is a great way to learn time management skills. On average, our students who have part-time jobs earn better grade point averages than those who don't work!
