Introduction

Susquehanna University maintains a rich campus tradition of Fall Orientation and Welcome Week each August as the University prepares for the arrival of the entering class. The Fall Orientation Team Leader (O-Team Leader) position has been designed to assist new students in their return to campus, helping to further orient and welcome them to SU after completing their Summer Preview Program Day. O-Team Leaders will work with the Welcome Week Planning Committee (WWPC) in facilitating new student and upper-level move-in into their respective residence halls, acting as a team leader in facilitating fall orientation, engaging students in fall welcome activities, assisting with first-year student academic planning, and acting as key peer link and support as the first-year students transition into their first week of college life.

As part of the experience, O-Team Leaders will work to develop and enhance communication skills, leadership skills, group work skills, and enjoy the benefits of networking with key campus administrators, faculty personnel, and distinctive university offices.

Qualifications

To be considered as a candidate for an O-Team Leader, a student must present the following qualifications:

  • Understand, appreciate and be able to articulate the mission and goals of Susquehanna University.
  • Be able to demonstrate a positive and enthusiastic regard for SU and campus life -- both academic and co-curricular expectations and involvement.
  • Be currently enrolled as a full-time Susquehanna University student having completed a minimum of one semester and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  • Must be a community member in good academic and disciplinary standing.
  • Be familiar and knowledgeable of the University campus, its history, resources and services and feel comfortable sharing and explaining this information to new students and their respective family members, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability through previous employment or campus involvement, especially prior experience as a student leader, group facilitator, and/or student advisor.
  • Must be available to participate fully in all scheduled pre-orientation training modules, Monday, August 18 - Wednesday, August 20, 2008, the fall orientation program schedule, Thursday, August 21 - Sunday, August 24, 2008, including First-Year Student Move-In, Thursday, August 21, 2008, and Upper-Level Student Move-In; Sunday, August 24, 2008, and must be able to assist with the launch of Welcome Week activities following fall orientation, Sunday, August 24 - Saturday, August 31, 2008.

Remuneration

The Fall Orientation Team Leader position is a volunteer-oriented position in which student leaders will be provided certain benefits for their participation and commitment:

  • O-Team will be required to arrive in advance of the fall orientation programs. Team Leaders will be permitted to move into their fall assigned housing upon arrival.
  • O-team Leaders will be provided breakfast, lunch and dinner meals during training, and in the course of the fall orientation programs. Other meals will be the responsibilities of the staff member.
  • O-Team Leaders will be provided a staff apparel to be worn in conjunction with their role in fall orientation programs.

Role Functions and Commitments

O-Team Leaders will be assigned and responsible for the following role functions and time commitments:

  • Lead and facilitate incoming first-year students in all scheduled program events and activities.
  • Co-lead group discussions, field events, such as SU Serve, and related activities oriented to team building, academic advisement, and discussions surrounding the common first-year reading and community theme.
  • Realistically yet enthusiastically represent the University, and serve as a role model for new students entering SU.
  • Conduct and facilitate program activities that will introduce, promote and educate new students about SU and its academic and co-curricular services and resources.
  • Work as a member of the Fall Move-In Crew responsible for assisting students move into their respective residence halls.
  • Familiarize new students and their families with the campus surrounding and the community of Selinsgrove, PA through walking tours and group discussions.
  • Respond to questions related to understanding academic decisions and course review and class selection.
  • Convey information about university services offered through Student Life, First-Year Programs, and about campus life in general that will set the foundation for a successful transition in the fall.
  • Assist campus units with the execution of presentations and participate as necessary.
  • Assist in all aspects of Fall Orientation and Welcome Week materials preparation, as assigned.
  • Perform set up and take down tasks as they relate to events or activities.
  • Attend to work assignments in a responsible, positive, and respectful manner which demonstrates good judgment, work ethic, and accountability as a University representative.
  • Act as a considerate team member and maintain a positive attitude and flexibility as it pertains to the work environment, responsibilities, and support of fellow members.
  • Have fun, enjoy the experience, and encourage new students to maximize their SU experience.

SCHEDULE OF TRAINING DATES AND PROGRAM SESSION DATES

Pre-Orientation Training Dates:

O-Team Leaders are required to participate in a training program prior to their involvement in the Fall Orientation and Welcome Week programs. The dates for this training will occur as follows:

  • Sunday, August 17, 2008:  Residence Hall Move-In – 12:00PM – 6:00PM – Office of Residence Life
  • Monday, August 18, 2008:  Day One Training: 9:00AM – 4:00PM; 7:00PM – 9:00PM
  • Tuesday, August 19, 2008: Day Two Training: 9:00AM – 4:00PM; 7:00PM – 9:00PM
  • Wednesday, August 20, 2008:  Day Three Training Day: 9:00AM – 3:00PM
  • Thursday, August 21, 2008:  Fall Move-In and Fall Orientation Commences: 6:30AM

Program Session Dates

O-Team Leaders are required to participate fully in all scheduled program dates and times which are in the process of being planned. The Fall Orientation dates commence on Thursday, August 21, 2008 and run until Sunday, August 24, 2008. O-Team Leaders will also be responsible for assisting with upper-level student move-in and the kick off of the Welcome Week Calendar of Events which will commence on Sunday, August 24, 2008. Full calendar of events will be made available upon the conclusion of the Summer Preview Days in July, 2008.
