Associate Professor of Chemistry

I chose to teach in a predominantly undergraduate institution because I wanted to work in an environment that would allow me to combine my passion for teaching with my love for research. I was attracted to Susquehanna because of its commitment to developing excellent teachers and the support that it offers for faculty to pursue their research interests.

Mentoring undergraduate researchers is an important part of my role as a faculty member at SU. My research in natural product chemistry is somewhat multidisciplinary and as such, I’m able to attract chemistry, biochemistry and biology students who are interested in pursuing advanced degrees in a variety of disciplines including chemistry, pharmacy, pharmacology and medicine. I am currently mentoring a biology major who has a strong interest in organic chemistry, but intends to pursue a career in medicine. Having a biology major collaborating with a chemistry professor is not unusual. In the sciences here at Susquehanna, there is a lot of collaboration across disciplines between faculty and students. These opportunities for research will be further enhanced when we move into the new science facility.

Our students are highly motivated and are given the latitude to explore new ideas and make important scientific discoveries. Within a few weeks of training, they’re running experiments on their own and taking ownership of their research projects. As a result, the caliber of our graduates is really excellent, with students going on to top-rated graduate schools, such as Yale, Cornell and UC-Berkeley.
