The
Earth and Environmental Science Department is in the ground floor
of Fisher Science Hall. Our facilities include classrooms, soil/sediment
and geochemistry laboratories, and a rock sample preparation room.
The department maintains an extensive collection of rocks and
minerals, as well as maps and aerial photographs from the region
and around the world. |

Field Stations
|
|
Hepner Ecology Lab at Camp Karundinha |
PENNDOT Wetland |
 |
Henstep
Run and Faylor lake are just a few of the ecological resources
available for fieldtrips and student projects available at the
Boy Scout camp. |
 |
Just
two miles from campus, this constructed wetland along Penns Creek
offers many opportunities for groundwater chemistry and ecosystem
structure studies. |
|
Montandon Marsh |
Urban Wetland in Sunbury |
 |
A
palustrine wetland in an ancient, abandoned channel of the Susquehanna
River, Montandon Marsh provides unique glacial outwash sediments
that support a variety of native and even rare species. |
 |
Urban
wetlands offer an interesting mix of urban influence on natural
ecology. The site combines groundwater discharge and stormwater
runoff into a basin that supports common reed, cattails, turtles,
and songbirds. |

Laboratory Equipment
|
|
Astoria-Pacific Aqua-Analyzer |
Hach Spectrophotometer |
 |
Microflow
technology allows for rapid analysis of water samples with very
little wastes. |
 |
This
and other portable instruments give student quick and reliable
measurements of common nutrient and ions in water. |
|
Quadrex Gas Chromatographs |
Soil Analysis |
 |
Gas
chromatography allows detection of trace quantities of fuels,
organic, and inorganic gases in air samples. |
 |
A
variety of rock and sediment analysis techniques can be performed
in our well equipped laboratories. |
|
Field Equipment
|
|
Mobile Environmental Lab |
X-Ray Fluorescence |
 |
Geology
and Environmental Science Mobile Laboratory means we can take
our field and laboratory equipment to where the action is! |
 |
A
portable X-ray Fluorometer provides the elemental composition
of sediments and rock without lengthy chemical analysis. |
|
Water Sampling |
Geophysics Instruments |
 |
The
department maintains a variety of instruments for manually and
remote recording of water chemistry and temperature. We conduct
studies of surface and groundwater chemistry, soil conditions,
and atmospheric monitoring. |
 |
The
department is capable of numerous non-invasive, subsurface investigation
techniques. Ground Penetrating Radar, electromagnetic terrain
conductivity, seismic monitoring, and electrical resistivity are
instruments in the field arsenal. |
