Mining Process
Coal was mined in two different fashions: surface and underground.
Surface, or strip mining, required the removal of the top layers of vegetation, soil, and rock to get to the coal vein which was then mined.
Underground mining requires the digging into the side of the mountain into the seam and then removed by mule drawn carts.
