1962 - The fire is ignited.
1962 to 1978 - Various Federal and State agencies spend $3.3 million on 6 unsuccessful attempts at controlling the mine fire.
1969 - The first 3 houses at Centralia are condemned.
1979 to 1982 - OSM acquires 34 impacted properties. The DER begins an air quality monitoring program.
1983 - OSM estimates that it would take $663 million to extinguish the fire. DER stabilizes Route 61 at a cost of $0.5 million.
