What are some tips for flu prevention?

  • Avoid Close Contact – Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
  • Stay Home When You Are Sick – If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
  • Cover Your Mouth and Nose – Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
  • Clean Your Hands – Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.
  • Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose, or Mouth – Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Practice Other Good Health Habits – Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
  • Ask Your Physician to Prescribe Anti-Viral Medication – Tamiflu can shorten the course of the illness and may reduce the intensity of the symptoms.

How do I get a prescription refill from my home physician?

In Pennsylvania, you may have your physician send you a prescription and take the actual script to the pharmacy and they will fill it. It does not matter what state you are from or which state the physician is from who wrote the script. If you have any questions please feel free to call the health center.

Do I need an appointment to see the physician?

That would be the best practice, yes. The Health Center offers Physician or Physician Assistant appointments every afternoon between the hours of 1:00pm and 4:30 pm. You can call the Health Center at 570-372-4385 or 570-374-9164 to coordinate that appointment time. Another option is to come into the Health Center during the morning hours (9:00am to 11:45am) for a nurse evaluation. She may assist you in coordinating that appointment if needed. She may also offer symptomatic care towards addressing your illness.

Can I receive allergy injections through the Health Center?

Yes. We require that you bring your allergy serum and instructions from your allergist's office. Allergy injections will only be offered during physician hours (1:00pm to 4:30pm daily.) We ask that you remain at the Health Center for 20 minutes after receiving the injection.

Can I get medications through the Health Center?

The Health Center offers a single dose over the counter medications, such as generic Tylenol, Maalox, ibuprofen or cough drops.

Some prescription medications ordered by the physician are available at the Health Center. These include a small selection of antibiotic therapy or decongestants. We do not honor pharmacy prescription plans, but rather obtain medications at a reduced cost. We share that reduced cost with our students. It is not necessary to bring cash with you. Medications can be billed to your account.

At the student's request, medications can be called to the local pharmacies where prescription cards will be honored. Transportation will be provided to these pharmacies if needed. In addition, April Black has coordinated a payment plan through CVS pharmacy so that you may not need cash to pick up your prescriptions there, as well. With permission, a medication can be billed to the "corporate card" and then applied to your account at SU.
