NEW CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER APPOINTED AT SU
SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – The board of directors of Susquehanna University has named Professor of History Linda McMillin as the new provost and dean of the faculty.

The appointment follows a national search, which brought four individuals to campus for interviews in December. The board approved McMillin’s appointment at its winter meeting Monday, Feb. 9, upon the recommendation of university President L. Jay Lemons.

McMillin emerged from the search with strong support from the search committee and the campus community. “We had an excellent pool of candidates for the provost position,” Lemons said. “Linda McMillin is an outstanding person. She has made numerous contributions to Susquehanna, and her voice and influence in American higher education is highly respected. We are delighted that she is taking on these new duties and that she will continue to be part of the Susquehanna family,” he added.

McMillin has acted as interim vice president for academic affairs since July 1, 2003. She replaced Professor of Philosophy Warren Funk, who is currently on sabbatical leave and plans to assume teaching duties upon his return.

McMillin has taught at Susquehanna University since 1989 when she joined the Department of History as an assistant professor. In 1996 she received tenure and was promoted to associate professor, and in 2002, she became a full professor of history. She has held the position of department head twice, once from 1993-1999 and again from 2001 to 2003. From 1998-2000, she directed Susquehanna University’s Honors Program.

McMillin earned her Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her undergraduate degree in theology and English is from Loyola Marymount University. She has also taught at the high school level in California and ESL (English as a Second Language) to adults in Barcelona, Spain.

McMillin has been honored with numerous awards and fellowships, including National Endowment for the Humanities grants and a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship/Spanish Government Grant. She was the recipient of an American Council on Education Fellowship from 2000-2001, during which time she served as special assistant to the president of Bloomsburg University, Jessica Kozloff. In addition, McMillin has acted as a consultant to other American institutions such as the University of Dayton, Wheeling Jesuit University and Elizabethtown College.

Other highlights of her career include an appointment as national project manager of the Associated New American Colleges Faculty Work Project II from 1999-2001 and participation in the Management Development Program at Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1995. McMillin also served on the advisory board of the Association of Governing Boards Academic Affairs Project from 2001-2003. From 1993-1995, she was a faculty participant in the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education triple initiative, a project for the development of innovative courses integrating science and the humanities for elementary teachers at Susquehanna University.

McMillin has authored more than 20 journal articles, in both English and Spanish, and edited two scholarly books, A New Academic Compact: Re-visioning the Relationship Between Faculty and Their Institutions with Jerry Berberet (Anker Press, 2002) and Hrotsvit of Gandersheim: Contexts, Identities, Affinities and Performances with Katharina Wilson and Phyllis Brown (forthcoming from Toronto University Press). She has taught and presented her work at more than 30 conferences in the U.S. and England, including numerous meetings of the International Medieval Congress, several annual meetings of the American Association of Colleges and Universities, and the American Council on Education Workshop for Department Chairs.

As provost and dean of the faculty, McMillin will play a central role in faculty recruitment, development and evaluation. She will provide intellectual leadership for the academic program and student learning, and be responsible for the university’s three schools, as well as interdisciplinary, student life, community outreach and academic support programs.
