Dr. Mcmillin is chosen as the Provost for Susquehanna UniversityFebruary 10, 2004
NEW CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER APPOINTED AT SU
McMillin emerged from the search with strong support from the search
committee and the campus community. “We had an excellent pool
of candidates for the provost position,” Lemons said. “Linda
McMillin is an outstanding person. She has made numerous contributions
to Susquehanna, and her voice and influence in American higher education
is highly respected. We are delighted that she is taking on these new
duties and that she will continue to be part of the Susquehanna family,”
he added. McMillin has acted as interim vice president for academic affairs since
July 1, 2003. She replaced Professor of Philosophy Warren Funk, who
is currently on sabbatical leave and plans to assume teaching duties
upon his return. McMillin has taught at Susquehanna University since 1989 when she joined
the Department of History as an assistant professor. In 1996 she received
tenure and was promoted to associate professor, and in 2002, she became
a full professor of history. She has held the position of department
head twice, once from 1993-1999 and again from 2001 to 2003. From 1998-2000,
she directed Susquehanna University’s Honors Program. McMillin earned her Ph.D. in history from the University of California,
Los Angeles. Her undergraduate degree in theology and English is from
Loyola Marymount University. She has also taught at the high school
level in California and ESL (English as a Second Language) to adults
in Barcelona, Spain. McMillin has been honored with numerous awards and fellowships, including
National Endowment for the Humanities grants and a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship/Spanish
Government Grant. She was the recipient of an American Council on Education
Fellowship from 2000-2001, during which time she served as special assistant
to the president of Bloomsburg University, Jessica Kozloff. In addition,
McMillin has acted as a consultant to other American institutions such
as the University of Dayton, Wheeling Jesuit University and Elizabethtown
College. Other highlights of her career include an appointment as national project
manager of the Associated New American Colleges Faculty Work Project
II from 1999-2001 and participation in the Management Development Program
at Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1995. McMillin also served
on the advisory board of the Association of Governing Boards Academic
Affairs Project from 2001-2003. From 1993-1995, she was a faculty participant
in the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities
Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education triple initiative,
a project for the development of innovative courses integrating science
and the humanities for elementary teachers at Susquehanna University.
McMillin has authored more than 20 journal articles, in both English
and Spanish, and edited two scholarly books, A New Academic Compact:
Re-visioning the Relationship Between Faculty and Their Institutions
with Jerry Berberet (Anker Press, 2002) and Hrotsvit of Gandersheim:
Contexts, Identities, Affinities and Performances with Katharina
Wilson and Phyllis Brown (forthcoming from Toronto University Press).
She has taught and presented her work at more than 30 conferences in
the U.S. and England, including numerous meetings of the International
Medieval Congress, several annual meetings of the American Association
of Colleges and Universities, and the American Council on Education
Workshop for Department Chairs. As provost and dean of the faculty, McMillin will play a central role in faculty recruitment, development and evaluation. She will provide intellectual leadership for the academic program and student learning, and be responsible for the university’s three schools, as well as interdisciplinary, student life, community outreach and academic support programs. -- published by The Crusader, Susquehanna University |
