Amanda Hawk, bottom right

Hometown: Reading, PA

Hobbies / Extracurricular Activities: Crew team, Phi Alpha Theta, other honor societies, work for the history department, reading, writing, playing the piano, and spending time with friends and family

Favorite history class so far: American Women, with Dr. Weaver, because it offered a new perspective on American history from the eyes of the female half of society.

What do you hope to do after you graduate? The thing I love about being a history major is that it allows for a wide variety of career choices. In terms of post-graduation, at this point I would like to attend graduate school for history or public history to work in a museum, historical society, or library. Eventually I hope to find a position that combines everything I enjoy about the major - reading, writing, researching, and learning anything possible about our history.

Writing a primary source paper using the university archives was one of my first tries at hands-on research. I loved the feeling of digging up an artifact from the past and discovering its historical significance. This type of research brings to light the importance of both preserving history and learning something the same time. So many students regard history as boring or useless, however, contact with primary sources allows me to catch a glimpse of life during a different era and start to understand the people who lived decades or centuries earlier.

Joe Thompson, '08

Hometown: Livingston, NJ

Hobbies / Extracurricular Activities: Phi Mu Delta Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Pi Leadership Society, Ice Hockey team, Trax Operations Manager, working in the history department, enjoys horror films and mixed martial arts

Favorite History Class So Far: Civil War with Dr. Slavishak because it is one of my favorite subject areas and we had the opportunity to visit Gettysburg and Antietam.

What do you hope to do after you graduate? I am a Secondary-Education minor, so my short term goal is to teach at the high school level. Eventually I want to obtain my masters, and maybe even further. I love to research, so hopefully one day I can find an opportunity in doing so.

Joe Thompson, center

My Civil War class was one of my favorite here at Susquehanna because it did not take place completely in the classroom. Other than visiting Gettysburg and Antietam, we went outside and studied tactics, looking at the land and surroundings from the perspective of a Civil War soldier. This hands-on experience allowed us as historians to stand in these soldiers’ shoes in order to understand their experiences better, as well as to just have fun with history!

T'rese Evancho, '10

Hometown: Hazleton, Pennsylvania

Hobbies/Extracurricular Activities: History Club, Presidential Fellows, community theatre, reading, volunteering and spending free time with my family

Favorite history class so far: The Holocaust with Dr. Imhoof because the topic of the class has always been an interest of mine. Also, the ways that Dr. Imhoof incorporated various aspects of the Holocaust and ways of thinking about it in to the course were very fulfilling.

What do you hope to do after you graduate: I love history and I hope to take that love and become a college professor. I plan on attending graduate school after my time at SU and work on obtaining a doctorate so that I can pass my love and respect for all that the study of history has to offer to my future students. I also enjoy the idea of the ongoing research and learning that is part of the job requirement.

Tim Allison, '09

Hometown: Cape May, NJ

Hobbies/Extracurricular activities: Phi Mu Delta, Phi Alpha Theta, History Club

Favorite history class so far: Civil War in the American Experience. The class gave a good balance of using critical thought towards looking at both primary and secondary sources. It also brought the Civil War to life through the field trips to Antietam (Sharpsburg) and Gettysburg, along with a battle tactics presentation.

What do you hope to do after graduation?
I am interested in working for the government, either as a State Department employee or with an organization working under contract with the government in the field of contemporary Islamic extremism. My main goal is to be able to comprehensively study and understand the mental and political workings of those involved in recruiting potential terrorists in an effort to stop terrorism at its source; recruitment.

History gives me a frame of reference that leads me to understand both contemporary and potential global issues by looking at their roots or potential origins.  If one looks at a current global issue without understanding its framework, the issue cannot be fully understood and therefore not effectively dealt with. A history degree can be very useful in many different ways; being an historian doesn't necessarily mean that one lives in libraries and archives.

Rebecca Swanger, '10

Hometown: Mechanicsburg, PA

Hobbies/Extracurricular activities: Assistant Project Manager of S.A.V.E, Member of the Presidential Fellows, working in the History Department, Currently creating the History Club on campus. My hobbies include reading, being outdoors/doing environmental service activities, playing the piano and oboe, watching bad movies and making commentary, and working at my local library during the summer.

Favorite history class so far: I've enjoyed many of my classes, but I would say my favorite is European History 1648-Present with Dr. Imhoof. I really enjoyed the subject material and studying the gradual effects of movements such as the Enlightenment, Scientific Revolution, and Industrial Revolution. I also enjoyed U.S. History 1877-Present with Dr. Slavishak because the class focused on many different events which helped me to understand the history of our Nation.

What do you hope to do after graduation? I plan to teach for a period of time and go to graduate school. I would love to work for a museum or with historical archives as well.

I love the history department at Susquehanna. The professors instruct well and spend extra time making sure the students understand the subject material. The professors also make students think beyond dates, names, and events to the larger picture of why these things matter. I love examining parts of cultural expression such as music, art, and literature and connecting those advancements to historical developments.
