Assistant Provost and Director of Institutional Research and Assessment
The Assistant Provost and Director of Institutional Research and Assessment is responsible for providing leadership for the newly established institutional research function. This position works closely with the Provost and other senior administrators to provide analysis of university data in support of decision making and planning. S/he collaborates with faculty and staff of the assessment of University Learning Goals. Additional tasks include some support staff supervision and other duties as assigned in support of the work of the Provost’s office.
The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment is new to Susquehanna. The university is building a more centralized function that brings together varied pan-campus efforts in fulfillment of a recommendation included in their last Middle States review. This position is an opportunity for an IR professional to build an office that meets the needs of the university and brings to it the best thinking in the organization and execution of this critical office.
Responsibilities
Institutional Research
- Provide leadership and direction for all institutional research activities
- Supervise the research, compilation, verification, and analysis of statistical data on the institution
- Develops implement and maintain systems to collect and report university data and ensures the integrity of data analysis and reporting methodologies.
- Prepare internal and external reports on a range of subjects, including regular and ad hoc requests
- Gather and maintain data necessary for submitting annual reports (IPEDS, CUPA, AAUP, etc) and college guide submissions
- Manage the design and development of all institutional studies and function as a clearinghouse for institutional surveys
- Support the data collection and annual reporting of Key Performance Indicators to the Susquehanna University Board of Trustees
- With the Provost, assist in planning for the university’s Middle States and AACSB reaccreditation processes
- Determine future information requirements, especially for institutional planning, research, assessment, and reporting activities
- Academic support staff development and supervision
- Establish relationships and interact with peers in the field of institutional research, especially in HEDS
- Contributes to the overall success of Office of the Provost and the university by performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Assessment
- Provide support for academic and institutional assessment
- Staff and support the Provost’s Taskforce on Assessment and work with academic and administrative departments to develop, implement and refine assessment plans
- Supports student success through research, analysis and reporting of student qualitative and quantitative data, which includes, but is not limited to qualitative student learning data, test data, enrollment patterns, retention/attrition reports, satisfaction surveys and transfer and placement rates.
- Coordinate the administration of large scale student and faculty assessments including the National Survey of Student Engagement, the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement, the HERI Faculty Survey, the CIRP First-Year Student Survey and the College Senior Survey
- Design and conduct studies as needed to address critical issues in other areas of the university that relate to the institution’s strategic priorities
- Disseminate results of assessment activities at regular intervals
Candidate Qualifications and Characteristics
Successful candidates will possess a minimum of a Master’s degree (doctorate preferred) with at least 1 to 3 years of institutional research experience and strong technical skills. Other experience requirements include:
- Research and reporting
- Statistical analysis
- Research methods
- Survey research and working with large databases
- Ability to report findings succinctly in understandable narrative, graphs, tables and/or charts
- An understanding of trends and issues in higher education, particularly as they relate to private, liberal arts colleges
- Familiarity with curricular and institutional assessment
- Technical expertise with data tracking systems (Datatel/Colleague a plus)
