Severe Weather Policy
The University will not be closed except in extraordinarily dangerous
weather. When the University is open, all administrative offices will
be open and all classes during the regular day program will meet unless
the instructor is unable to get to class.
Faculty and staff members must use their own judgments as to whether it is safe for them to come to the University or whether they must leave work earlier than the regular time because of severe weather. Individual circumstances vary greatly, and cannot all be well matched with the University-wide actions.
Any hourly-wage employee who misses work because of severe weather conditions, other than when the University is closed, should arrange with his or her supervisor to make up the missed time prior to the end of the next pay period, or if making up the time is not possible within this time, the employee's personal leave or annual leave should be charged.
In case of extraordinarily dangerous weather conditions, the President or a person designated by the President will close the University by means of announcements on the following local radio and TV stations:

In this case, all University classes and public events will be canceled and all offices will be closed, except food service, security, the switchboard, and the physical plant, which must remain open with at least minimal services throughout any weather emergency. When the University is closed, employees who are not required to work to provide essential services will be paid for the lost time and will not be required to make it up. Hourly-wage University employees who are required to work when the University is closed during weather emergencies will be paid double-time for the hours worked.
Because we cannot control the speed with which the radio and TV stations will broadcast our message once they receive it, we will also post the message using the campus voice mail system so that anyone who dials
372-2878 (372-ATSU) will hear the message. It will
not be necessary to check your individual voice mailbox. A message will also be posted to the scroller on the home page of Susquehanna's Web site.
The Director of Continuing Education or the Provost will make decisions as to whether Evening Program classes will be canceled because of weather problems, and decisions to cancel Evening Program classes will be communicated through Continuing Education's voice mail and through the University Office of Communications to the area radio and TV stations listed above for broadcast.
The individuals in charge of specific public events will make decisions as to whether they will be canceled, and decisions to cancel events will be communicated through the University Office of Communications to the area radio and TV stations listed above for broadcast and via the campus voice mail system and the Web site.
If you have specific questions about the policy, please contact your supervisor for further information.
