PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH

At the start of this new calendar year, all of us associated with Susquehanna University can look back with pride on the accomplishments of the past year. Among 1999's highlights were:

  • continued excellence in teaching and learning;
  • a record enrollment for the fifth straight year;
  • the completion of the $6.8 million Business and Communications Building and the expansion and renovation of Smith Hall creating space for 116 new beds;
  • the continued success of the University's Susquehanna 2000: The Next Challenge Capital Campaign, which has exceeded the board-established goal of $42 million and has so far secured gift commitments of over $44 million for construction projects, endowment, and operating support;
  • the groundbreaking for the new football stadium and initial work on other phases of the new sports and fitness complex, and the announcement of a $1 million Kresge Challenge grant for the project;
  • an increase in the University's endowment from $79 million to over $90 million; and
  • for the 21st consecutive year, a balanced budget.

These successes would not have been possible without the outstanding contributions of faculty and staff, both in and out of the classroom.

With tremendous gratitude, we also acknowledge Joel Cunningham's role in making Susquehanna the place it is today. Thanks to his leadership and vision, Susquehanna University has never been stronger. When Joel leaves the University this summer to become vice chancellor and president of the University of the South, he will leave an institution well-positioned for continued success.

To continue building on this strong foundation, the board of directors will give special attention to the selection of the 14th president of Susquehanna University. To that end, I have begun to structure a presidential search committee, which will include representatives from the board, faculty, administration, student body, and alumni. I have also begun to review the credentials of a handful of potential search firms that might assist us in the search. My goal is to have a search firm in place in time to meet with the board at its February 14th meeting and possibly to have them hold some initial sessions with other key constituent groups as well.

Joel has assured me that he will continue to be an active president until his departure in mid-summer and I have the utmost confidence that he, and all of you, will maintain Susquehanna's momentum and provide a path for a smooth transition to new leadership.

As always, I welcome your questions and comments about this or any other matters related to the University.

Samuel D. Ross

Board Chair

ATHLETIC OFFICES

As of January 6 the athletics offices have moved to the coaches annex office suite. The suite is located at the top rear of the PE building - at the Smith Hall end. The most convenient entry is through the double doors at the end of the building - go directly up stairs. Phone numbers are unchanged.

The move was made at this time to accommodate construction needs in the near future.

Fitness room equipment is now all in the "old weight room" and in the multi-purpose room. The reason for the move is the same as above.

Thanks for your patience as we begin an exciting construction process!

Don Harnum

Director of Athletics

A NOTE FROM NEIL

I have experienced the most terrifying and unpleasant weeks of my life. After surgery to repair a 2-cm hole in my heart---electrical shock to restore a normal heart beat--- and a plugged colon and urinary tract, I am well. The prayers, flowers, cards, phone calls and food are greatly appreciated. I have had many tears in my eyes the past three weeks. But I am alive and I have been blessed. Thank you all for your many kindnesses. I am back and ready to start classes next week. Shalom.

Neil H. Potter

Professor of Chemistry
