How do I know if I can participate in the London Program?
Every business student in good standing who has applied has been offered the
opportunity to participate. Currently about half of all business majors participate in the
London Program. However, as demand for study abroad rises, The Sigmund
Weis School will seek additional opportunities for cross-cultural
experiences in addition to expanding the
London Program.

How much additional cost is involved in London vs. being on campus?
There are two components to this answer. First, food and housing are
significantly more expensive in London than on campus. The combined total
charge for room and board on campus is about $4,200 per semester, while in
London the room cost alone is about $5,500. Food costs will depend on how,
what, and where the individual student eats, but will typically be between
$1,500 and $2,200 for the semester. In total, food and housing will run
between $2,500 and $3,000 more than on campus. These estimates will change
due to inflation and the dollar/pound exchange rate. In addition, there is
a $1000 non-refundable payment to cover additional costs associated with
the London abroad activities.
Then, there is individual travel. Students quickly learn to use the
discount airlines (e.g., Ryan Air and Easy Jet) and the youth hostel
network to visit, typically, between 5 and 10 countries during the
semester. While this travel is convenient and inexpensive, it is not free.
Depending on one's appetite and budget for travel, this amount could range
from $2000 to $7,000.
On average, students report spending about $6,000 more during their London
semester than they do during regular semesters in Selinsgrove. They also
appreciate that this is, literally, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The
Sigmund Weis School provides round- trip airfare to London as well as to
field trip destinations on the Continent and throughout the UK, entrances
to business and cultural sites, and many other incidental items.
How and when do I sign up and get accepted?
The London Program is designed for junior level business students. In
October of the sophomore year, students interested in the London Program
meet to learn more of the specific details and procedures. All sophomore
business majors are invited to apply.
Interested students submit their applications for the following academic
year (both fall and spring semesters) to the dean's office in January.
This coincides with the selection of housing arrangements for the
following academic year, so that students who will be in London in the
fall may arrange for spring to use the room of a student who will be in
London in the spring.
Is there a "deposit"?
We ask for a $500 deposit at the time of application and an additional
$1,000 upon acceptance to the Program. This ensures a student's
seriousness about participating in the Program, and it pays for items
committed in advance such as airline tickets, theatre tickets, hotels,
etc. This payment is in addition to tuition, housing, and meals.
Like virtually all study abroad programs, we require a non-refundable
prepayment of half of the housing cost 90 days in advance of the semester
in London.
How do I communicate with home?
Students normally purchase prepaid phone cards whose cost per minute on
calls to the USA is about five cents. Also, each student has his or her
personal mobile (cell) phone that works on the Vodafone "pay as you talk"
plan and enjoys free received calls in the UK. In addition, each flat has
a regular land-line phone.
Every student has an official Susquehanna e-mail account with webmail
access that functions worldwide. Most students take laptop computers to
London, and therefore can take advantage of the high-speed wireless
connectivity provided in each of our housing units. Staying in touch with
home is as easy as it is on the home campus.
