Brussels
If you
are looking for a good “practice” trip, Brussels would be the place to go
because it is close by and easy to get to. It is only a two and a half
hour train ride via Eurostar. The biggest culture differential is that
they speak French in Brussels, so ordering food and navigating around town
is a bit more of an adventure. Another major difference about Brussels is
that drivers drive on the same side of the road as we do in the United
States, which is a nice change from London. If you are looking for
nightlife though, Brussels may not be the place for you unless you go
downtown on a Friday or Saturday night. The city is the headquarters for
the EU and has just one tourist area in the entire city. When we first
arrived, we were expecting Belgian waffles and chocolate to be around
every corner. However, it wasn’t that easy; we had to walk to the downtown
area called Grand Place. (Pictured is a building at the square in Grand
Place).
Dining:
Brussels
is known for several things: one of them is very, very good food. When
visiting, make sure to get waffles with as many toppings as possible-
trust me, they are worth the price. They also squeeze all of their orange
juice from fresh oranges, at least all that I witnessed. Make sure to
visit the chocolate factory; it costs a few Euros but you get to see how
they make their chocolate, and get a few free samples as well.
For another trip, a large number of us planned to travel to Brussels and Amsterdam the weekend of October 12th. When we decided this back in September, I immediately got online and started looking for flights. It takes a lot of time researching and comparing different airlines and their prices. After about two hours of clicking around, I found flights that fit our schedule and our wallet. We are flying out of Stansted and coming back to Heathrow on two completely different airlines. Jackie was in charge of booking our hostels and luckily we are in the same hostel as everyone else, which is awesome! Booking online was very easy. Our tickets were e-mailed to me and all I had to do was print them off. We saved about ₤16 of agency fees by doing it ourselves.
