Difficulties in connecting:
If you get a popup saying "Network path not found" or
something similar, try running "\\sydney"; if that works, the problem may
be that Windows XP Service Pack 2 changed your network settings.
Open Control Panel/Network Connections, right click on Local Area Connection,
click on Properties, scroll down and highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)",
click on Properties, click on "Advanced" at the bottom right of the General
panel, click on the WINS tab at the top, and click on the "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" button. Hit OK buttons to get out of everything and try again. If
all this doesn't work, come ask me for CDs.)
Microsoft Office - General word processing, spreadsheet, database,
and presentation software. Available in all computer labs.
Visual Studio 2008 - The latest version of Visual Studio, released
November 19, 2007. Available on all lab machines.
Available for download and install to all students
enrolled in a department course.
If you are connected to the campus network, then you
can install directly off the network by typing
\\mathserver\MSDNAA\VisualStudio2008\setup.exe in your Start/Run box,
or if you are running Internet Explorer you can just click
here.
(If you get a logon popup, log in to the SUSQU domain, that
is, enter your username as susqu\username and use your network password.)
There is also a DVD ISO image in
\\mathserver\MSDNAA\VisualStudio2008. Be sure to have at least 10 GB free
disk space before trying to install.
Visual Studio.NET 2005 -
The previous version of Visual Studio is at
\\mathserver\MSDNAA\VisualStudio2005\setup.exe.
MSDN Subscription - The Department has a subscription to Microsoft
Developers' Network Academic Alliance that permits students in the
department's courses to download much of Microsoft's main software products:
operating systems, Visual Studio, Back Office servers, etc., etc.,
including beta versions of upcoming products. (Not Office, though.)
Download from
\\mathserver\msdnaa\readme.htm.
MSDN Library - The complete Microsoft Developers' Network Library,
documentation about everything in the MSDN Subscription. It is available
to anyone on our network. It does require the installation of a small
80 MB version on your local machine, but the gigabytes of documentation
remain on the network. Run
\\mathserver\MSDNAA\MSDN Library 2005\setup.exe,
and choose the Typical
Installation.
Minitab, version 15 - Statistics program used in Department
statistics courses. Available in labs. Available on the network at
\\mathserver\minitab\mtb15.exe. (NOTE: the first time you use
minitab on a particular computer, you will get a popup asking for
a license server. Enter "app1@27000" (without the quote marks).)
SPSS, A big-time statistics package.
Available in labs.
SAS, Another big-time statistics package.
Available in labs.
Derive for Windows, version 6 - The standard symbolic mathematics
program used by Department courses. Available in labs.
Students on campus may run Derive on their own Windows computers over the
network by running
\\app1\Derive 6\Derive6.exe.
NOTE: You must have several special Derive font files installed
on your computer for Derive to work properly. Open
\\app1\Derive 6, copy the four files
DerUNI_B.TTF, DerUNI_I.TTF,
DerUNI_J.TTF, and DerUNI_R.TTF, and paste them into your Windows font
directory, which is probably C:\Windows\Fonts.
MatLab - A comprehensive mathematics program emphasizing matrix
operations (as in linear algebra, not the movies). Available to all
on campus for student and classroom use at
\\mathserver\matlab\bin\matlab.exe. For convenient use, you can
set up a desktop shortcut for location \\mathserver\matlab\bin\matlab.exe,
and after the shortcut is finished, you should open the Properties of the
shortcut and set the "Start in:" box to the name of the folder you want
to be the default folder MatLab starts in. The currently installed
version of MatLab is R2008a.
Mathematica - A comprehensive symbolic mathematics program. It
is installed on several professors' office machines, and could be
installed for student use if the need arose.
