Susquehanna University Men’s Rugby

The last three seasons have been some of the most successful seasons in Susquehanna University Men's Rugby history. In both Fall 2013 and 2012, the 15 a-side team finished 1st in the EPRU Small College West Division. In both 2013 and 2012 the team had a strong run in the playoffs and reached the EPRU Small College championship where they have ultimately finished as runner-ups both years. Despite finishing as runner-ups in 2013 and 2012 they have garnered a bid into a play-in game for the National Small College Rugby Organization's National Championship playoffs. In both 2013 and 2012 they lost in the play-in game to Montclair State University (NJ).

In 7-a-side rugby Susquehanna has been extremely successful the last two years with two consecutive national championship appearances. In both spring 2014 and 2013, the Susquehanna University men's 7's rugby team won one of the 8 National Small College (NSCRO) 7s qualifiers and placed in the NSCRO national 7s championships in Philadelphia, PA.

In 2014 the team won the Grove City Qualifier, and the team finished in a tie for 2nd in their pool and missed advancing to the semi-finals on a tie-breaker. The club finished the season ranked 7th in the 2014 NSCRO 7s rankings.

In 2013 the team won the Philadelphia Qualifier, and the team finished 5th overall, losing to both the champion - Occidental College and 2nd place team- University of North Florida in close pool play matches. The club finished the season ranked 6th in the 2013 NSCRO 7s rankings.

Several Susquehanna rugby players have played rugby as part of their GO (Global Opportunities) program while at Susquehanna. Current players Joe Borza '16, Alex Holderbaum '15, and Luke Wenzel '15 studied for three weeks on a GO your own way program in Auckland, New Zealand. During Fall 2013, 4 Susquehanna players are studying away in London, UK as part of the Sigmund Weis Business School-London Program. During summer 2013, captain Zach Bascio '14, played at the University of Queensland Rugby Academy. In the spring of 2012, backline captain Mike Tilley ’13 spent the semester studying abroad at the University of Otago in Christchurch, New Zealand. As part of his study abroad experience Mike was able to play rugby at the highest collegiate level in New Zealand. In the fall of 2010, Adam Petrone ‘12, Chris Tilley ‘12, and Will Dietrich-Egensteiner ’12 studied at the University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland and were able to hone their skills with the University of Limerick team.
