Susquehanna University Men’s Rugby
The 2012-2013 rugby season was the most successful season in Susquehanna Men's Rugby history. In the April of 2013, the Susquehanna University men's 7's rugby team won one of the 8 National Small College (NSCRO) 7s qualifiers. In winning the Philadelphia qualifier they were one of 8 teams to play in the national championships in Philadelphia, PA in June 2013, The team finished 5th overall, losing to both the champion - Occidental College and 2nd place - University of North Florida in close pool play matches. The club finished the season ranked 6th in the 2013 NSCRO 7s rankings.
In Fall 2012, Susquehanna University men’s rugby finished 1st in the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union (EPRU) Small College West Division with a 5-0 record. This resulted in their 2nd straight playoff appearance under 3rd year head coach Dr. Jonathan Niles. The team won their semifinal playoff against Penn State University-Berks 45-22. With a National Small College Rugby (NSCRO) playoff appearance on the line in the EPRU final, SU lost a hard fought 28-24 match against rival Gettysburg College. Depsite the loss, SU still garnered an at large bid into NSCRO playoffs thru a play-in gae against Montclair State University (NJ). An intensely physical match against a larger opponent saw SU fall 31-19 match.
Several Susquehanna rugby players have played rugby as part of their GO (Global Opportunities) program while at Susquehanna. During Fall 2013, 4 Susquehanna players are studying away in London, UK as part of the Sigmund Weis Business School-London Program. During summer 2013, forwards captain Zach Bascio '14, played at the University of Queensland Rugby Academy. In the spring of 2012, backline captain Mike Tilley ’13 spent the semester studying abroad at the University of Otago in Christchurch, New Zealand. As part of his study abroad experience Mike was able to play rugby at the highest collegiate level in New Zealand. In the fall of 2010, Adam Petrone ‘12, Chris Tilley ‘12, and Will Dietrich-Egensteiner ’12 studied at the University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland and were able to hone their skills with the University of Limerick team.
