Mission

The field of medical humanities fosters interdisciplinary inquiries in medicine. The field includes art and medicine, bioethics, the history of medicine, literature and medicine, music and medicine, medicine in the performing arts, philosophy, psychology, theology, and medical anthropology and sociology. The goal of medical humanities is exploration of how humanities disciplines illuminate the nature and practice of medicine. Scholars in this field integrate scientific understandings of physical nature with humanistic explorations of experience.

The Susquehanna University Medical Humanities Initiative brings together faculty and students to discuss the possibilities of such work. Faculty members present original research that highlights various analytical approaches to health and the body. The MHI offers students a forum in which to engage with scholarly work in the field and the opportunity to present their own research.
