Book Signing - Feb. 4Writing major William Paris ’10, author of The Great Journey: Beginnings of the Soul Keeper, held a reading and book signing on Feb. 4. Paris, from San Antonio, Texas, is an Honors Program student, presidential fellow and Office of Multicultural Affairs staff writer. Read more here. Voter Registration Drive - Feb. 19The Gentlemen of 312 University Avenue and Sigma Gamma Rho sponsored a voter registration drive in the lower level of Degenstein Campus Center.

Women’s Dinner Party - Feb. 25The Office of Multicultural Affairs sponsored a women's dinner party to facilitate the research of Simona Hill, associate professor of sociology and co-director of the Honors Program, and Annie Houser, adjunct faculty in the sociology and anthropology department and women's studies program. Participants shared their views on contemporary women’s issues, the state of feminism, and concerns of women faculty and staff at Susquehanna University. A Special Reception with Kathy Pape - March 12The Theresa Palmer Society hosted a reception with Kathy Pape, president of Pennsylvania American Water, who delivered the 2008 Sigmund Weis Memorial Lecture. The purpose of the endowed Weis Lectureship is to bring prominent persons from business and public life to Susquehanna to address issues of interest to both the university and to the local business community. Pape joined a group of Susquehanna women and shared her wisdom and executive experience about what it takes to succeed in the business world. Retreat for Women of Color - March 15The Theresa Palmer Society sponsored the Women's History Month event, "Awakening and Nourishing Our Spirits," a Susquehanna University campus retreat for women of color. Facilitated by Marilyn Johnson, a psychotherapist, organizational consultant and coach, the retreat was designed to teach women to proactively support themselves and thrive. Supporting co-facilitators included Simona Hill, Honors Program co-director and Armenta Hinton, interim director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Phi Beta Sigma Reception - March 16
Susquehanna University welcomed its first historically black fraternity to campus. Five students and three faculty/staff members were inducted into the organization. Pictured are student inductees Victor Taylor ’09, Gregory Jones ’10, George Livingston ’09, Bobby Bradley ’10 and Alexander James ’09. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. was founded at Howard University in 1914, and has evolved into a highly respectable international organization that embraces men of all nationalities who believe in the central tenants of brotherhood, scholarship and service. The organization's motto is “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity.” Some notable Sigma men are Nelson Mandela, Morgan Freeman, Dr. G. Iggers, Dr. Alain Leroy Locke (the first black Rhodes Scholar) and George Washington Carver. More information is available at the Phi Beta Sigma Web site, www.pbs1914.org.
Theresa Palmer Society Luncheon - April 13The Theresa Palmer Society hosted a luncheon for members and invited guests, honoring Theresa Palmer '73 Tracy, the group's namesake and first African American woman to graduate from Susquehanna. Also attending was Joan Wiggins '74. Senior members Courtney Allen '08, Muriel Langley '08, Brittany Wood '08 and Taiisha Swinton '08 were recognized at the event. |
