SU Offers Programs to High School Students This Fall
October 2, 2007
SELINSGROVE, ( Pa. ) – High school students will have the opportunity to learn about topics in business, science, writing and the arts at Susquehanna University during a series of workshops this fall. Sponsored by the Office of Admissions, these day-long events allow college-bound students the chance to sample academics with experts in their fields.
“The Action Days program gives high school students a taste of the rich learning environment Susquehanna has to offer,” says Chris Markle, director of admissions. “The faculty is constantly coming up with new ways to engage students in collaborative academic pursuits that expose them to experiential learning opportunities and one-on-one interactions with their professors. Faculty does this because they know that the best way to learn is by doing and the best way to teach is by providing individual attention.”
The series of workshops begin on October 8 with Business Action Day, designed for students interested in accounting, business, economics, finance, information systems, marketing or management. The program will focus on the rapidly changing business environment and how to prepare for it.
Science Action Day will be held October 19. Working with SU faculty and current students, participants will conduct experiments in biochemistry, earth and environmental sciences, anatomy, mathematics and computer science, physical chemistry, and organic chemistry.
Writing Action Day on October 22 will offer aspiring writers workshops on a variety of skills and literary genres. Students will work with several published writers in workshops on college writing, creative nonfiction, critical nonfiction, fiction, writing and film, journalism, poetry and sports journalism.
Liberal Arts Action Day is scheduled for November 5. Workshops with faculty and students will be conducted in the areas of economics, education, history, political science, pre-law, psychology and public relations.
Arts Action Day on November 12 will feature workshops in the creative and fine arts. Topics include graphic design, lighting design, computer visualization and acting. A music workshop will include a master class in instrumental or voice performance.
For those high school students interested in learning about Susquehanna more generally, the Office of Admissions will offer a Fall Open House for Prospective Students on October 27. The open house will include opportunities to speak with Susquehanna faculty, students and admissions staff. A student activity fair will be held, as will academic open houses and supplemental information sessions.
