SU Hosts Special Combined Homecoming and Alumni Weekend
September 8, 2006
SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) – More than 1,000 parents, alumni and friends of Susquehanna University are expected to be in town Friday, September 29, through Sunday, October 1, for a special Homecoming and Alumni Weekend. The highlight of the weekend is a day full of special events on Saturday, September 30. The events will celebrate the past 60 years in the life of Susquehanna University, which will mark its sesquicentennial in 2008.
Events will kick off with a Pre-Parade Festival Brunch for the Susquehanna community. A “Homecoming Parade for the Ages,” the likes of which hasn't been seen in Selinsgrove for many years, will be a highlight of the morning activities.
The parade will include decade-themed floats representing the last 60 years, classic cars, street performers, marching bands, giant character balloons and the 2006 Homecoming Court. The parade begins at 10:45 a.m. in front of Weber Chapel Auditorium. It will travel east on University Avenue, then east on Pine Street and south on Broad Street until reconnecting with University Avenue and proceeding back to campus in a westerly direction. A performance area will be staged along University Avenue near the main entrance to campus.
“Float City,” a kids' carnival that adults will love too, will open at 12:30 p.m. and run through 4:30 p.m. This event, located in the lawn west of Nicholas A. Lopardo Stadium, will feature inflatable rides, carnival games, decade-themed candy and treats, face painting and spin art. Elsie the Clown will be on hand to make balloon animals for the kids, while Mom and Dad visit the photo station where they can have their picture taken with American icons like James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, John Wayne, Rowdy Yates, Austin Powers and Felicity Shagwell. The decade-theme floats from the parade will also be on display in “Float City.”
The Pre-Game Spectacular celebrating Susquehanna’s through the decades will begin at 1:15 p.m. in Nicholas A. Lopardo Stadium. This heart-warming and historic ceremony will feature the Susquehanna University Stadium Band, the University Masterworks Choir and special guests. A special announcement and surprise recognitions will be a focal point of the pre-game activities.
Crusader s football against King's College will kick off at 2 p.m. During halftime, the Homecoming king and queen will be named, and a drawing will be held for an extraordinary alumni experience.
Following the football game, alumni, parents, students and other SU community members will gather at Arthur Field, just east of Lopardo Stadium, for “Susque-palooza.” This post-game party will feature celebrity impersonators performing as such superstar legends as Frank Sinatra, John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Elton John and Cher. Dinner and entertainment will be provided in decade-themed tents, including a reproduction of the M*A*S*H 4077th tent.
Also included in the evening's events will be a 1980s-theme All-Campus Dance Party at Trax, Susquehanna's new on-campus social space. Special events for classes celebrating five-year reunions will take place across campus and at downtown dining establishments.
