SELINSGROVE—Susquehanna University’s student radio station, WQSU-FM, took home a first-place award in the 2010 Pennsylvania AP Broadcasters Association news awards contest. This marks the third consecutive year, and the sixth time in seven years, that WQSU has taken AP honors.
WQSU won the Sports Play-by-Play category among small-market radio stations for its broadcast of a key Landmark Conference men’s basketball game between Susquehanna and visiting Moravian College on February 13, 2010.
“The play-by-play is described in fine detail and with good energy,” AP judges said. “Lots of good background inserted into the flow of the broadcast and a great example of the fun that is college sports.”
Jack Burns, the “Voice of the Crusaders” for more than two decades and an SU Sports Hall of Fame member, provided play-by-play commentary, and Bob Healy, then director of sports information, served as color analyst. Engineers were then-senior and SU football standout Drew Champney and Parker Weston, now a senior majoring in communications with an emphasis in broadcasting.
The Pennsylvania AP news awards recognize outstanding broadcast journalism efforts by AP-member radio and television stations, cable television and networks in Pennsylvania. The awards were presented April 9 at the Holiday Inn Harrisburg/Hershey in Grantville, Pa.
