Published on February 10, 2012
The Susquehanna University Artist Series will present the American Spiritual Ensemble on Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Degenstein Center Theater.
Composed of some of the finest vocalists in the country, the American Spiritual Ensemble is returning to Susquehanna University after its first acclaimed appearance during the 2008–09 season. With a diverse program of spirituals and Broadway numbers, the ensemble features vocalists from the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, San Francisco Opera, Boston Opera and Atlanta Civic Opera.
“The ensemble comprises a superb group of singers,” said Valerie Martin, dean of Susquehanna’s School of Arts, Humanities and Communications. “They are passionate, enthusiastic and exceptional musicians who take the audience on a journey through the Negro spiritual and music in the African-American tradition.”
Tickets are available by visiting the Susquehanna University box office or by calling 570-372-ARTS. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens and $5 for non-SU students.
The Susquehanna University Artist Series has been presenting internationally acclaimed artists of dance, music and theater for the university and larger community since 1902. The Artist Series seeks to encourage an aesthetic appreciation of diverse cultures as well as the artistic heritage of humankind. Performances are often linked in ways that advance intellectual engagement through master classes, lectures or content of the artistic presentation.
