SU Men’s Club Rugby Team Earns No. 19 National Ranking

The Susquehanna men’s rugby club team finished the 2012 fall season ranked 19th in the nation by the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) LLC.
The Crusaders went 6-2 during the fall season to earn the No. 19 ranking. New England College was ranked No. 11 with its 11-0 mark. The rankings and won-loss records were based on the Fall 2012 Union/Conference league and playoff results, associated strength of schedule and the NSCRO playoffs results.
SU’s 2012 season was the most successful one since the 1996 campaign. The 2012 team won the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union (EPRU) Small College (DIII) West Division with a 5-0 mark. The Crusaders earned the No. 2 seed in the EPRU semifinals and hosted No. 3 seed PSU-Berks. Susquehanna came out victorious in that matchup, winning by a score of 45-22.
That victory sent the Crusaders to the championship game against Gettysburg where they were narrowly edged 28-24. Susquehanna then subsequently fell to Montclair State in a play-in game.
As the team heads into the offseason, head coach Jon Niles reflected on the past season’s success and looked ahead to future seasons.
“We were successful this season, because we played team rugby,” Niles said. “When we didn’t play team rugby and relied on individual play we struggled. We still have to realize that the team is only as strong as the weakest player. Going into the spring we hope to recruit additional players as we will be preparing to compete against several Division II programs this spring to further challenge ourselves.”
