SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Former Millersburg resident Douglas E. Arthur and his wife, Lucille, were honored at Susquehanna University's Homecoming football game on Saturday, October 7, with the naming of the football team's new practice facility. When completed next summer, the new Douglas E. Arthur Field will be located northeast of the university's new Lopardo Football and Track Stadium at Stagg Field, which opened in September.
A dedicated volunteer and supporter of the Susquehanna football program for many years, Arthur played Crusader football under legendary coach Amos Alonzo Stagg, Sr., and his son, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Jr. in the late 1940s. A 1949 graduate of Susquehanna University, Arthur served on its board of directors from 1973 to 1993, and was awarded an honorary degree by the university in 1996. He and his wife, Lucille, created a scholarship fund at Susquehanna several years ago that supports students from the Millersburg area.
During pre-game ceremonies in the center of Stagg Field, the Arthurs were joined by Acting President Sara Kirkland, Athletic Director Don Harnum and head football coach Steve Briggs. Following the naming of Arthur Field, they presented the Arthurs a football signed by members of the 2000 football team as a token of the university's thanks and appreciation for their support.
The new athletic facilities are part of a $14 million renovation and expansion of Susquehanna University's sports and fitness complex, the final component of the Susquehanna 2000: The Next Challenge capital campaign.
