SELINSGROVE, (Pa.) - The public will have five opportunities to enjoy the musical talents of Susquehanna University's faculty and students in November.

On Friday, Nov. 1, The Susquehanna University New Music Ensemble will perform a concert of contemporary classical works titled, "Loud 3." The program will feature music by well-known composers William Duckworth, Edgard Varése, Andrea Reinkemeyer, John Cage and Randall Woolf. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Stretansky Hall of the university's new Center for Music and Art.

That same weekend, the Susquehanna University Chorale will also present a concert in Stretansky Hall. Conducted by Judith White, a lecturer in music at the university, the concert will feature a Renaissance antiphonal choral work by Hassler, The Magnificat, a Baroque choral work with harpsichord, oboe, violin and cello accompaniment, three Brahms compositions sung in German, a set of spirituals and selections by Rutter. The concert begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3.

Then, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, the Susquehanna University Jazz Ensemble will take the stage in Stretansky Hall. Under the direction of Gail Levinsky, assistant professor of music, the ensemble will perform works by Sammy Nestico, Less Hooper, Dee Barton, Denis Diblaso and Milt Jackson. The ensemble instrumentation includes saxophones, trumpets, trombones, tuba, piano, guitar, bass and drums.

Stretansky Hall will also host a concert by the Susquehanna University Percussion Ensemble on Tuesday, November 19. The ensemble is directed by Greg Alico, a lecturer of music at Susquehanna.

The fifth concert in November will be held in Weber Chapel Auditorium on Sunday, Nov. 17. Conducted by Valerie Martin, the Susquehanna University Symphonic Band takes the stage at 3 p.m. The band will open with Eric Whitacre's Noisy Wheels of Joy. Martin, the director of bands and head of Susquehanna's Department of Music, describes the piece as "a short, sparkling overture designed to start the concert with a bang." Following the explosive opening, the band will perform works by Frank Ticheli, Joseph Schwantner, Roger Cichy and Howard Hanson.

All five concerts are free to the public. For more information, contact Susquehanna University's Department of Music at (570) 372-4281.
