Acclaimed novelist and short story writer Andre Dubus III will present a reading of his work at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, in Isaacs Auditorium of Susquehanna University's Seibert Hall. Dubus is the 2006-2007 Visiting Writer-in-Residence, sponsored by The Writers Institute at Susquehanna University . His reading is free and open to the public. Books by Dubus will be available for purchase and signing following the reading.

Dubus is best known for his novel House of Sand and Fog, which was a National Book Award finalist in 1999 and was made into a movie in 2003. The book became a best-seller through its promotion by Oprah's Book Club.

“Set amid the frequent, flowing fogs and unsteady sands of pacific suburbia, [ House of Sand and Fog ] examines what happens when ordinary men and women move across that tenuous barrier between the normal and the irrational,” said Bill Sharp, a reviewer with The New York Times. Most noteworthy, according to Sharp, is Dubus' “highly visual, descriptive language.”

Other works by Dubus include Bluesman (1993) and The Cage Keeper and Other Stories (1989). Dubus is a recipient of the prestigious Pushcart Prize and the 1985 National Magazine Award for Fiction. His work has been included in The One Hundred Most Distinguished Stories of 1993 and The Best American Short Stories of 1994. He was one of three finalists for the 1994 Prix de Rome given by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Son of the critically respected short story writer, Andre Dubus, whose stories also have been transformed into movies such as In the Bedroom and We Don't Live Here Anymore, Dubus III received formal education at Bradford College, the University of Texas and the University of Wisconsin before dropping out to travel the country working different jobs, including as a carpenter, construction worker, bounty hunter, bartender, counselor, actor and finally a fiction writer. Currently, Dubus works as an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, teaching general writing, fiction, and other courses.

In addition to his reading, Dubus will be on campus visiting with classes for a one-week residency. He is the second of six writers scheduled to read at Susquehanna during the 2006-2007 academic year. The next reading hosted by The Writers Institute will be given by novelist Jennifer Haigh on November 9.
