ANNUAL RIVERCRAFT READING TO BE HELD AT SU
Reading to Feature Poet and Managing Editor of Fence Magazine

April 9, 2007

SELINSGROVE, ( Pa. ) – The Writers Institute at Susquehanna University is proud to announce the publication of this year's RiverCraft magazine. To celebrate the event, a reading will be held by select published students at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in Isaacs Auditorium of Seibert Hall.

Produced by Susquehanna students, RiverCraft is an on-campus literary magazine featuring fiction, nonfiction, poetry and photography. The magazine was developed to encourage the craft of creative writing among SU students of all majors. Of the 65 submissions received this year, about 20 were chosen for the magazine.

RiverCraft was first published in 1964 under the name Focus. The Writers Institute was formed in 1999, and two years later, the magazine was renamed Susquehanna Review. In 2003, Susquehanna Review became a national literary magazine, and the on-campus publication was renamed RiverCraft.

The guest speaker for the April 19 reading will be poet Charles Valle, managing editor of Fence magazine. Valle's visit to Susquehanna University is sponsored by The Writers Institute's Visiting Writers Series.

In addition to writing poetry and managing the editorial budget of Fence , Valle works as a photo researcher in educational publishing. Fence is a New York-based literary magazine that is especially interested in challenging contemporary poetry and fiction, and in the publishing of young, promising writers. An accomplished poet, Valle's work has appeared in such publications as Denver Quarterly, KIOSK, eye-rhyme, Lungfull!, and Berkeley Poetry Review.

“Valle reflects the kind of passion for, and dedication to, contemporary literature that I think we all honor and can learn from,” said Karla Kelsey, assistant professor of creative writing.

While on campus, Valle will also judge the published works in Rivercraft and, from them, select one outstanding student writer for the Juliet Gibson Memorial Award. Two finalists will also be selected, one each in prose and poetry. The Juliet Gibson Memorial Award was established in 1988 in remembrance of the student editor who died in a campus accident.

RiverCraft is one of three literary magazines produced annually at Susquehanna University . Essay , which is published each fall, focuses entirely on nonfiction writing by Susquehanna students. Susquehanna Review accepts works of fiction, nonfiction and poetry from undergraduates across the country.
